While waiting for the bus, I'll sit on the bench and eat breakfast.
This is breakfast and lunch.
I was nervous and could only eat half of it.
We got on the bus.
The bus ride was just over 30 minutes.
It's gradually getting brighter outside.
We've arrived at the trailhead.
A trailhead is the place where you start climbing.
It says Yakushima National Park, Arakawa Trailhead.
We'll start from here.
This is the trekking route to Jomon Sugi.
This is the trailhead where we are now.
First, we'll walk 8.1 km on a fairly flat path.
After that, there's a 2.5 km mountain climb.
And then here
We'll arrive at Jomon Sugi.
11 km one way, 22 km round trip.
It's a trek that takes about 10 hours.
We started at 6:30 in the morning.
Is everyone okay with high places?
I'm not okay.
I'm okay.
At double pressure...
There is a handrail.
No, it's scary.
There was a bridge right away.
It's a bridge where you can see down through the open parts.

A big typhoon came to Yakushima in August.
At that time there was a power outage, and it seems the electricity has not come back since.
So it was dark inside.
100The tracks we are walking on now are called the trolley road. 100
It was made over 100 years ago.
It was originally built to transport cut Yakusugi cedars.
This is called a water bucket.
It is full of water inside.
It is said that about six hundred to seven hundred kinds of moss grow on Yakushima.
This is said to be one-third of the moss found in Japan.
A large rock has come into view on the left.
This rock is granite.
Yakushima is said to be an island made of granite.
Because it is made of granite, there is said to be little soil.
In other words, there are not enough nutrients for trees.
The cedars of Yakushima...
Because they live with few nutrients, the trees grow slowly.
So the growth rings become dense and it becomes a tree with a lot of resin.
Because it has a lot of resin, it does not rot easily and was valuable as timber, so a lot of it was cut down.
The pleasant morning light has started to shine through.
The sun is rising beyond the mountains.
We came to a bridge with no handrails.
I knew I wouldn't fall if I walked straight, but it was still scary.
I'm glad there was no wind.
The other people were still in the middle of the scary bridge listening to the guide's explanation.
Is this the scariest one?
There's one more place, one more place.

I think it must have been hard work.
This is the last bridge without handrails.
This one wasn't that high.
But it was scary enough.
Next is a bridge called Kosugidani Bridge.
Since we walk along the river all the way, there were many bridges.
All these large rocks are said to be granite.
I've gradually gotten used to these kinds of bridges.
Around where people are resting is said to be where there used to be an elementary and junior high school.
In other words, people used to live around here.
At its peak, more than 500 people are said to have lived here.
When there were no more trees to cut, all the villagers moved away.
This is a Yakusugi cedar cut crosswise.

This is where there used to be a mountain hut.
This is said to be the remains of the bath used at that time.
I think they burned a fire inside this hole.
There is a hole over here too.
This water is drinkable.
Well, let's set off again.
This trolley track continues for about another hour and a half.

Can you see this insect?
It looks like a spider, but it's said to be an insect closer to a mite than a spider.
This insect is said to be the model for Kamaji in Spirited Away.
Another scary bridge has come.
It's scary when you can see clearly below.
