Hi everyone, I'm Layla from Bite Size Japanese.
How are you?
This podcast is where you can learn natural Japanese as if you're talking with a friend.
In this episode, I'd like to share with you
the habits and ways of thinking I usually keep in mind to make life better.
First, don't expect things from others.
To expect means to want something from someone.
And second, when you're struggling, remember that it's okay to live as yourself.
And third, don't try too hard, 80 percent is okay for everything.
And lastly, fourth, reduce smartphone use.
I mean reducing the time I spend using my smartphone.
はい。Yes.
Well, of course, it's easier said than done.
Even I often forget these things when I'm tired.
でもBut
I think it's quite important to remind myself of the values I cherish whenever something happens
So I hope you'll listen to this episode with a light heart and relax.
Yes, so first, the first thing I usually keep in mind is not to expect things from others.
Since I became able to do this, I feel like I've become kinder to my family.
For example, if I want my husband to wash the dishes, I make sure to tell him clearly in words
That's what I try to be careful about.
And,
で、without clearly asking the other person yourself, yet expecting it from them
I think it's not a good thing.
So if there's something I want the other person to
だからもし私が相手に何かdo for me, I try to ask them verbally as much as possible.
But even then, if they still don't do it, I just give up on it
That's what I try to keep in mind.
And I used to think a lot like, I want my husband or my family to do this or do that.
But just expecting things from others really changes nothing, while
自分のfeelings of frustration just kept growing bigger and bigger
イライラする気持ちだけがこうどんどんどんどん大きくなっていってand in the end, my frustration got so big that my
でさ最終的にえ最後にはねもうイライラが大きくなりすぎて私のanger would explode, like I would just blow up and blame the other person
That happened quite often, especially about housework
Like, why don't you clean, why don't you wash the dishes, mainly things like that
So not expecting things from others,
だから相手に期待しないif you want someone to do something, ask them with words — I learned that's really important.
One more important thing is, when you do something,
あともう一つ大事なのは、こう何かをするときにto do it because you want to do it, I think that's important.
For example, a friend's wedding.
My friend invited me to come,
友達が来てって言ってくれて、and I thought, oh, if it would make my friend happy, I'd like to go.
But when I thought about it, that friend and I weren't super close.
But even if I went to the wedding, I thought
I'd probably end up barely talking to that friend and the wedding would be over.
And in that case, I thought I'd probably regret going to the wedding.
So in the end, I didn't go to that wedding.
Yes, so first, the first thing I usually keep in mind is not to expect things from others.
But if I really like that friend,
and I go to that wedding because I want to go, I don't think I'll regret it.
なのでSo
What I try to be careful about is when I do something for someone,
not to expect anything in return from them, not to seek thanks or gratitude.
Because if I do something for someone while expecting something from them,
and that return or thanks or gratitude doesn't come back, I'll be disappointed.
I don't want to do that.
Yes, what do you all think?
うん。Yeah.
Another good example is, for example, even though I gave a friend a birthday present,
I didn't get a present on my own birthday.
So, feeling disappointed about having given that friend a birthday present
is, well, really not good at all, right?
It just makes the frustration grow.
はい。Yes.
So, I try to be careful in my daily life not to expect things from people as much as possible.
Well, doing that, I do tend to drift apart from some friends.
Drift apart means the relationship becomes distant.
Well, but that can't be helped.
Because with really close friends, the relationship should continue.
Yes, then the second habit I try to keep in my life is, especially when I'm worried,
自分らしく生きていてもいいっていうことを思い出すto remember that it's okay to live true to myself
that's what it is.
Yes, when you're worried,
なんで悩むかっていうと、いろんなthe reason you worry is because of various
I think you worry because you're influenced by your environment and other people's opinions and ways of thinking.
Actually, I was worrying a lot last week.
The reason is,
まあ自分のwell, my own
my English isn't very good, so I was scared to apply for jobs and couldn't apply.
I worried and worried, wondering why my English is so bad.
But another thing I worried about was.
なんか自分の専門の仕事を早く見つけないといけないthis pressure that I have to find a job in my specialty quickly,
っていうプレッシャー、everyone around me has their own specialty and earns full-time, but I don't have that.
Everyone around me has their own specialty and earns full-time, but I don't have that.
So I should also find my specialty, find work I want to do, and make a better income.
But right now I'm not in that state.
That's what I was worried about.
And at that time I read this book.
This book is about the life of a Japanese grandpa and grandma.
This grandpa and grandma
don't live to fit society or the way people around them think, but truly cherish what they value.
They cherish their way of thinking and live cherishing their own feelings.
So this grandpa and grandma have no savings and don't care about others' evaluations.
But they seem so happy somehow.
They are two people truly living true to themselves, and
when I read this book about them, it reminds me that it's okay to live true to myself.
When I worry, it's comparing other people's ideas and society's norms with,
そして今の自分を比べて自分が足りてないこととか自分ができてないことをand the current me, and focusing on what I lack and what I can't do.
I worry because I keep staring at it, but still.
When I can think it's okay to live true to myself, I feel so relieved, and I don't worry so much.
What matters to me is supporting myself and my family,
それさえできていたら別に自分の専門のフルタイムの仕事がなくっても、as long as I can do that, I don't need a full-time job in my specialty,
even if I can't speak English perfectly, well, isn't that fine?
Especially, I thought, there's no need to rush to become fluent in English right now, well, not really.
So after reading this book, I felt so much relief last week.
So especially when you're struggling, that it's okay to stay true to yourself.
Remembering that is really important, because
When you die, what you'll regret is not living true to yourself, not being honest with your own feelings,
生きなかったことを後悔するし、自分がyou'll regret not living that way, and
I think you'll regret not being kind to the people you cherish.
So it's fine if I'm able to live in a way that satisfies me right now.
And besides, life is getting shorter moment by moment, even right now.
So rather than sacrificing the present time to earn a high income in the future,
or working hard through tough times for things like that.
I really thought after reading this book that I want to live happily in the time I have now, this precious time.
Really, now is only now.
So thinking about it that way, being tossed around and controlled by things like others' opinions or income,
そういった自分の大切にしていることとは別のことに振り回されてコントロールされてthings separate from what I truly value, and living a painful life because of that,
I really felt that would be such a waste.
はい。Yes.
It's pretty hard to remember this when you're struggling right now,
私はあの悩んでいる時に自分の価値観がbut when I'm struggling, rereading a book that reflects my own values,
I think that's really effective.
So I've read this book over and over again many times.
So I really think you all should find a book with the same values as what you truly,
hold dear.
It can be a book, or a work like a movie is fine too.
Music might be good too.
Now, the third habit I pay attention to in life: don't try too hard, don't overdo it.
After all, it's impossible to do everything perfectly.
So I make it okay if things are done to a certain extent.
For example, cleaning, if you really try to clean
perfectly, it takes an incredibly long time, right?
70%、80%But if it's just making it about 70%, 80%
clean, it doesn't take that much time.
Just vacuuming and putting things fallen on the floor back where they belong, that alone doesn't take much time, right?
But if you start doing detailed things like removing all the water stains in the sink,
水の汚れも全部取って、窓も拭いて、全部のほこりを取って、wiping the windows, and removing all the dust,
it takes an enormous amount of time.
So for cleaning, I just decide it's okay if it's roughly clean.
And for cooking too, even if it looks bad,
悪くてもちょっと味が悪くてももうそんなに気にしないで自分が好きな器にeven if the taste is a bit off, I don't worry much and just put the food in my favorite dishes,
and it always looks delicious, so I decide that's okay.
Like this, I don't have that much interest in cleaning or cooking, so
deciding it's okay if it's roughly done makes it so much easier.
So I think it's important to skillfully cut corners.
Cutting corners
It's a phrase I use really often, but this 'cutting corners' means, when working, well, your own time and
effort.
Well, skillfully reducing the
仕事にかかるまあ時間とか力を少なくして80%ぐらい仕事をやるっていうtime and effort that work takes, and doing work at like 80%, that
スキルは本当に家庭でも職場でもskill is really important both at home and at work,
I think.
After all, we're busy, so housework, work, relationships, being perfect at all of them
So for me,
これは手を抜けるなって思うやつはどんどん手を抜いていくっていう習慣はすごく大事だと思うthe habit of cutting corners more and more on things I think I can cut corners on is really important.
And then it becomes easier to keep going.
For example, my podcast is like that too, I cut corners like crazy.
When I started YouTube, I put a screen behind me, and I bought lighting and set it up,
I was trying so hard, but now it's really easy.
もうLike,
自分が普段使っているデスクにマイクは置きっぱなしで、カメラもすごく使いやすいやつを買って、the mic just stays on the desk I normally use, and I bought a camera that's really easy to use,
だからポッドキャスト始めるまでにかかる時間がso the time it takes until I start the podcast
is almost like a minute, and also my makeup, it's super easy.
And, since it's a podcast, editing is just adding subtitles, it's just so easy anyway,
It's truly a podcast where I cut every corner possible.
I think that's exactly why I've been able to keep it going.
So that's why I think not trying too hard is incredibly important.
Okay, so lastly, the fourth habit I'm careful about.
This is reducing the time I spend using my smartphone.
Especially reducing the time I use my phone with no purpose.
You know,
YouTube Shorts
とかTikTokとかをこう何の目的もなしにただスクロールしてる時間って一番or TikTok, just scrolling with no purpose at all, that time is the most
wasteful, I feel.
But I don't feel that way when I'm watching a movie or reading a book.
Even if it's a book or movie I didn't really like that much.
I don't feel disappointed that I wasted my time.
And I think the reason is, movies and books are things you chose yourself, right?
But when you're just scrolling on your phone,
ただスクロールしてるときってこう自分では選んでないショート動画とか記事とかそういったものit's time spent just looking at short videos or articles that you didn't choose yourself,
right.
In other words, you're being controlled by your phone or social media.
And moreover, short videos and such
are fast-paced and it's just time spent receiving information without thinking about anything.
So, I think, I sometimes end up watching short videos in the morning, and when I do, my
work pace for the day drops, and I feel like my ability to think drops too.
It might be just my imagination, but I think it's probably true.
So as much as possible, especially time watching short videos, I want to reduce it, and instead
I want to spend time on movies and books.
And, to kill time, I also sometimes watch short videos for 20 minutes or
30 minutes, but if I switch that to books, that becomes a really good way to kill time too.
So lately I've been trying hard to make my time-killing time about books rather than my phone.
And, also, when you're using your phone, inevitably.
You end up opening social media and seeing friends' posts, right?
And I'm the type who's really easily influenced by that kind of thing.
I end up comparing myself to others, and it'd be fine if I didn't compare,
Because if I see it, I'll end up comparing myself, so I thought it's better not to look, and I deleted my accounts for that kind of social media.
I really, you know, things like that
I try to be careful not to keep things I'm not good with around me.
If you do that, your stress will go down quite a bit and I think you'll feel more at ease.
はい。Yes.
Well, so that's about it.
In this episode, I introduced the habits that I usually try to be mindful of.
And saying it is easy, you know.
Continuing to do it is what's difficult.
But like I said earlier, you know,
I think it's important to remind yourself of what you cherish from time to time.
Remembering it, and then noticing again at that moment
気をつけるっていうのをand being mindful of it
I think repeating that is kind of what life is about, so if you'd like, I hope you all will also use this episode to
自分が大事にしている習慣とか価値観とか思い出してまた人生の中でrecall the habits and values that are important to you, and then in your life
keep putting them into practice.
はい。Yes.
