じゃあ始めましょう。Well then, let's start.
一つ目です。The first one.
すみません。Excuse me.
すみません。Excuse me.
日本人はどうしてすみませんとたくさん言いますか?Why do Japanese people say sumimasen so much?
そうですね。Well...
すみませんはいろいろな場面でよく聞きます。You hear sumimasen in many different situations.
ごめんなさいという時もすみません。When saying sorry, it's also sumimasen.
お店の人を呼ぶ時もすみません。When calling a shop staff, it's also sumimasen.
誰か私を助けてくれました。Someone helped me.
その時もすみませんと言いますよね。At that time too, we say sumimasen, right?
同じ言葉です。It's the same word.
でも意味が少し違います。But the meaning is a little different.
面白いですね。Interesting, isn't it?
今日は三つの場面で考えてみましょう。Today let's think about three situations.
一つ目は電車の中です。The first one is inside a train.
私は隣の人の足を踏んでしまいました。I stepped on the foot of the person next to me.
痛いですね。That hurts.
私は言います。あ、I say, oh,
すみません。I'm sorry.
これはごめんなさいという意味ですね。This means I'm sorry, right?
二つ目はレストランです。The second one is a restaurant.
私はレストランに行きました。I went to a restaurant.
水が欲しいです。I want some water.
店員さんを呼びます。I call the staff.
すみません、水ください。Excuse me, water please.
このすみませんは人を呼ぶ時の言葉ですね。This sumimasen is a word for calling someone.
すみませんと言います。We say sumimasen.
三つ目はドアです。The third one is a door.
私は重い荷物を持っています。I'm carrying heavy luggage.
すると近くの人がそのドアを開けてくれました。Then a nearby person opened that door for me.
そして私は言います。And I say,
すみません。Excuse me.
今この三つの場面ですみませんを使いました。Now I used sumimasen in these three situations.
全部同じ意味ですか?Do they all have the same meaning?
どうしてWhy
店員さん、レストランの店員さんを呼ぶ時にすみませんと言いますか?do we say sumimasen when calling a restaurant staff member?
ちょっと考えてみてください。Please think about it a little.
皆さんレストランにいます。Everyone, you are in a restaurant.
店員さんは働いています。The staff member is working.
皆さんは水が欲しいです。You want some water.
だからその店員さんに来てもらいますよね。So you have them come to you, right?
だからこのすみませんは忙しいけどこちらに来てくださいSo this "sumimasen" means "you're busy, but please come here,"
ありがとうございますという意味です。it means "thank you."
じゃあドアを開けてくれた時はどうですか?Then how about when someone opened the door for you?
うん。Yeah.
さっきの場面、さっきの話を思い出してください。Remember the scene from before, remember what we just talked about.
その人は私のためにドアを開けてくれました。That person opened the door for me.
私は思います。I think,
ドアを開けてくれてありがとうございます。Thank you for opening the door.
そしてこれも思います。And I also think this.
私のために待ってくれてすみません。I'm sorry for making you wait for me.
だから二つあります。So there are two things.
ドアを開けてくれてありがとうございます。Thank you for opening the door for me.
そして私のために待ってくれてすみません。And sorry for making you wait for me.
この二つの気持ちがあります。I have these two feelings.
ありがとうとごめんなさい。Thank you and I'm sorry.
この二つの気持ちがあります。I have these two feelings.
だからドアを開けてくれた人に私はすみませんと言いました。So I said "sumimasen" to the person who opened the door for me.
じゃあ次の言葉です。Then, the next word.
大丈夫。Daijoubu.
大丈夫。Daijoubu.
大丈夫はイエスですか?ノーIs daijoubu yes? Or no?
ですか?Which is it?
どっちですか?Which one is it?
うん、いい質問ですね。Yeah, good question.
でもこれはとっても難しい質問です。But this is a very difficult question.
まず二つの例を見てみましょう。First, let's look at two examples.
一つ目はカフェです。The first one is a cafe.
椅子が二つありました。There were two chairs.
うん。Yeah.
一つは誰かが座っています。Someone is sitting on one.
でも一つは誰も座っていません。But no one is sitting on the other one.
空いています。It's empty.
誰も使っていません。No one is using it.
でもその人の友達が来るかもしれませんよね。But that person's friend might come, right?
だからみなさんはその人に聞きます。So you ask that person.
ここに座って大丈夫ですか。Is it okay if I sit here?
ここに座って大丈夫ですか。Is it okay if I sit here?
はい大丈夫ですよ。Yes, it's fine.
この大丈夫はいいですよという意味ですね。This daijoubu means "it's fine," right?
じゃあ二つ目です。Then, the second one.
私はコンビニで買い物をしています。I'm shopping at a convenience store.
レジにいます。I'm at the register.
店員さんが私に聞きます。The clerk asks me.
袋いりますか?Do you need a bag?
そして私は言います。And I say,
大丈夫です。It's okay.
この大丈夫はどちらですか?Which one is this daijoubu?
袋いりますですか?Is it "I need a bag"?
袋いりませんですか?Is it "I don't need a bag"?
どっちですか?Which one is it?
うん難しいですね。Yeah, it's difficult.
この大丈夫ですは袋いりませんという意味が多いです。This 'it's okay' often means 'I don't need a bag.'
一つ目の例の大丈夫はいいですよ。The 'daijoubu' in the first example means 'that's fine.'
二つ目の例の大丈夫ですは いりません。The 'daijoubu desu' in the second example means 'I don't need it.'
うん同じ言葉同じ大丈夫だけど意味が違います。Yeah, same words, same 'daijoubu' but the meaning is different.
どうしてですか?Why is that?
大丈夫ですは問題ないです問題ありませんという意味です。'Daijoubu desu' means 'no problem, there is no problem.'
でもいりませんと言いたい時も大丈夫ですと日本人は言います。But even when they want to say 'I don't need it,' Japanese people say 'daijoubu desu.'
本当はこれは間違いです。Actually this is a mistake.
正しくありません。It's not correct.
皆さん思いますよね?You all think so, right?
え日本人は正しくない間違った日本語を使っていますかHuh, are Japanese people using incorrect, wrong Japanese?
?はいはい。? Yes, yes.
そうですね。That's right.
辞書にもこう書いてあります。It's written like this in the dictionary too.
大丈夫は問題ないですという意味です。'Daijoubu' means 'no problem.'
でも最近若い人But recently young people
はいりませんと言いたい時も大丈夫ですと使います。also use 'daijoubu desu' when they want to say 'I don't need it.'
そう、辞書には書いていません。Yes, it's not written in the dictionary.
だから本当は正しくない日本語です。So actually it's incorrect Japanese.
だから日本人でもこの大丈夫So even among Japanese people, about this 'daijoubu'
の使い方うん変ですねと思う人もいます。some people think, hmm, this usage is strange.
袋いりますか?Do you need a bag?
大丈夫です。It's okay.
どっち袋いるの?Which is it, do you need a bag?
いらないの?Or don't you need it?
どっち?Which one?
と思う日本人もいます。There are Japanese people who think that.
じゃあお店で袋いりますか?So at the store, 'Do you need a bag?'
と皆さん聞かれました。you were all asked.
うん皆さんなんと答えますか?Hmm, how do you all answer?
なんと言いますか?What do you say?
皆さんも大丈夫ですと言いますか?Do you all also say 'daijoubu desu'?
なんと言いますか?What do you say?
袋が欲しいときは袋お願いします。When you want a bag, 'A bag, please.'
袋お願いします。A bag, please.
袋いらないときはいらないです。When you don't need a bag, 'I don't need it.'
いらないです。I don't need it.
これで大丈夫です。This is fine.
とてもわかりやすいですよね。It's very easy to understand, right?
でもレジ袋いりませんと言いたいときに日本人のネイティブみたいに。But when you want to say you don't need a plastic bag, like a native Japanese person.
大丈夫ですと言いたいですか?Do you want to say 'daijoubu desu'?
そんな時は大丈夫ですと言いながらこのジェスチャーをしてください。In that case, while saying 'daijoubu desu,' please do this gesture.
大丈夫です、大丈夫です。It's okay, it's okay.
このジェスチャー皆さん知ってますか?Do you all know this gesture?
外国でこのジェスチャーは臭いの意味ですよね。In foreign countries this gesture means smelly, right?
でもこの顔の前で左右にBut this, in front of the face, left and right
手を振るこのジェスチャーは日本で二つ意味があります。waving your hand, this gesture has two meanings in Japan.
一つは外国と同じ臭いという意味です。One is the same as abroad, meaning smelly.
でももう一つはいやという意味です。But the other one means no.
これいやの意味です。This means no.
だから大丈夫ですと言いながらこのジェスチャーをするとわかります。So if you say "It's fine" while making this gesture, they will understand.
袋いりますか?Do you need a bag?
大丈夫です。It's fine.
これは袋いりませんの意味です。This means "I don't need a bag."
だからネイティブみたいに大丈夫ですと言いたいときはこのジェスチャーをしてください。So when you want to say "It's fine" like a native, please use this gesture.
じゃあちょっと皆さん練習してみましょう。Well then, let's all try practicing.
私はお店のスタッフです。I am the store staff.
私は聞きます。I will ask.
袋いりますか?Do you need a bag?
皆さんは袋いりません。You all don't need a bag.
じゃあなんと言いますか?So what do you say?
ちょっと練習してみましょう。Let's try practicing a bit.
袋いりますか?Do you need a bag?
皆さんなんと言いましたか?What did you all say?
いりません。No, thank you. / I don't need one.
それか大丈夫です。Or, "It's fine."
できましたか?Could you do it?
大丈夫です。It's fine.
大丈夫です。It's fine.
いりません。I don't need one.
はい、皆さんこのジェスチャー使ってみてくださいね。Yes, please try using this gesture, everyone.
次の言葉に行きましょう。Let's move on to the next word.
次はあなたです。Next is 'anata' / you.
あなたです。It's 'anata' / you.
教科書であなたと習いますよね。You learn 'anata' as 'you' in textbooks, right?
でもアニメとか日本の会話であなたはあまり聞きません。But you rarely hear 'anata' in anime or Japanese conversation.
あまり使いません。We don't use it much.
どうして日本人はあなたを使いませんか。Why don't Japanese people use 'anata'?
うんどうしてですか。Yeah, why is that?
少し言葉の歴史を話します。I'll talk a little about the history of the word.
ずっと昔このあなたは遠い場所という意味でした。A long time ago, this 'anata' meant a distant place.
そして後で。And later.
あなたという言葉を人に使い始めました。People started using the word 'anata' for people.
私は日本語レッスンをしています。I teach Japanese lessons.
だから学生からよく聞かれます。So I am often asked by students.
先生、あなたと言うと失礼ですか?Teacher, is it rude to say 'anata'?
うん。Yeah.
私は失礼だと思います。I think it is rude.
でも例えば友達にあなたと言われたら、なんかちょっとBut for example, if a friend said 'anata' to me, it feels kind of
変な感じがします。strange.
どうしたのと思います。I'd think, what's wrong?
これは多分このあなたは遠い場所という意味でしたよね。This is probably because 'anata' originally meant a distant place, right?
だから友達にあなたと言われたら、うん、私とあまり仲良くないですか?So if a friend says 'anata' to you, like, hmm, are we not close?
と。You might feel that way.
感じるかもしれません。You might feel that.
じゃああなたと言いません。So we don't say 'anata'.
日本人は何と言いますか。What do Japanese people say?
一番多いのは名前ですね。The most common is the name.
その人の名前を言います。We say that person's name.
例えば田中さんと話しています。For example, I'm talking with Tanaka-san.
日曜日に何をするか聞きたいです。I want to ask what they will do on Sunday.
私は田中さんに言います。I say to Tanaka-san,
あなたは日曜日に何をしますか。What will you do on Sunday?
これも大丈夫です。This is also okay.
でも田中さん日曜日に何しますか。But, 'Tanaka-san, what will you do on Sunday?'
これはもっと自然です。This is more natural.
あなたより田中さんを使います。I use 'Tanaka-san' rather than 'you'.
あなたと言いません。I don't say 'you'.
田中さんと言います。I say 'Tanaka-san'.
じゃあ皆さん思いますよね。So everyone thinks, right?
いつも名前を言いますか。Do I always say the name?
うん、いいえ。Yeah, no.
例えば、おなじ例です。For example, it's the same example.
私は田中さんと話しています。I'm talking with Tanaka-san.
田中さんに日曜日何するか聞きたいです。I want to ask Tanaka-san what they will do on Sunday.
私は言います。I say,
日曜日何しますか。What will you do on Sunday?
日曜日何しますか。What will you do on Sunday?
あなた言いません。I don't say 'you'.
田中さん言いません。I don't say 'Tanaka-san'.
ここでは私と田中さん二人で話しています。Here, it's just me and Tanaka-san talking together.
だから日曜日何しますか。So, 'What will you do on Sunday?'
これで田中さんはあ、私に聞いていますねとわかりますよね。With just this, Tanaka-san understands, ah, you're asking me, right?
だから私は田中さん。So I don't say 'Tanaka-san'.
と言いません。I don't say it.
日本語ではあなたや名前を言わなくてもわかります。In Japanese, you can understand even without saying 'you' or the name.
これは英語とか他の言語、他の言葉にないThis is a rule that doesn't exist in English or other languages,
ルールだから、最初は少し難しいですよね。so it's a bit difficult at first, right?
でもたくさん練習したら大丈夫です。But if you practice a lot, you'll be fine.
皆さん一緒に頑張りましょう。Everyone, let's do our best together.
次の言葉です。Next phrase.

例えば水お願いします。For example, 'Water, please.'
これは水が欲しいですという意味ですよね。This means 'I want water,' right?
でもよろしくお願いしますは何が欲しいですかわかりませんよね。But with 'yoroshiku onegaishimasu,' you don't know what they want, right?

例えば皆さんは日本語で手紙を書きました。For example, you wrote a letter in Japanese.

皆さんは先生に言います。You say to the teacher,

だから見てください。So please look at it.
よろしくお願いします。Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
このよろしくお願いしますは私の手紙チェックしてくださいThis 'yoroshiku onegai shimasu' means 'please check my letter'

いろいろディスカッションしましょうねという意味です。It means let's have various discussions.
じゃあ最後の言葉です。Now, the last phrase.
お疲れ様。Otsukaresama.
お疲れ様。Otsukaresama.
日本人はお疲れ様とよく言いますよね。Japanese people often say 'otsukaresama,' right?
このお疲れ様は何ですか。What is this 'otsukaresama'?
いつ使いますか。When do we use it?
まずこの言葉を見てみましょう。First, let's look at this phrase.

疲れるという漢字があります。It has the kanji for 'tsukareru' to get tired.
うん。Yeah.
じゃあ皆さん思いますよね。Then you all think, right?
うん。Yeah.
じゃあひまわり先生。Then, Himawari-sensei,

違います。That's wrong.
お疲れ様はたくさん頑張りましたねという意味です。'Otsukaresama' means 'you worked hard.'
お疲れ様はいろいろな時に使います。We use 'otsukaresama' in many situations.
例えば皆さん仕事の後友達とご飯に行きます。For example, after work you go to eat with a friend.

その日皆さんも友達も仕事しましたよね。Everyone, you and your friends worked that day, right?
だからこのお疲れ様は今日もたくさん仕事しましたね。So this "otsukaresama" means you worked a lot today too.
頑張りましたね。You did your best.
という意味です。That's what it means.
こんにちはとかこんばんはよりお疲れ様の方がよく使います。We use "otsukaresama" more often than "konnichiwa" or "konbanwa".
