MiyuHello everyone. Welcome to Miyu's
Japanese Cafe.
Let's talk a lot today using real Japanese.
Suddenly, here's a quiz.
When Japanese people want to go eat delicious food,
、GoogleマップやYelpよりも一番最初に見るアプリdo you know what app they check first, even before Google Maps or Yelp?
Actually, there's a super popular app unique to Japan.
The apps everyone uses abroad and
海外でみんなが使っているアプリとthe apps Japanese people use every day are actually completely different.
So today,
So today,
I'll talk about 5 apps that Japanese people definitely use.
Of course for those traveling to Japan soon,
and it's also really useful for anyone who wants to know real Japanese daily life and culture.
Please enjoy listening until the end while comparing
what's different from the apps used in your country.
Well then, cheers as always.
Right away, then let's start with the first app.
LINEThe first one is the messaging app LINE. LINE...
Have you all heard of it?
I actually use it every day too.
It's like WhatsApp or Messenger overseas.
But in Japan, very few people use WhatsApp and such.
Everyone has LINE.
And if you don't have LINE, people will be really surprised.
It's an app that everyone has that much.
In Japan, LINE is used not only with family and friends but also for contact with part-time jobs
and coworkers.
It's that convenient.
And a common real-life situation is, for example, when a group gathers at an izakaya or cafe,
でグループで集まったとき、when gathered in a group,
誰かがあ、今日の写真グループラインに送っとくねって言って、someone says, oh, I'll send today's photos to the group LINE, and
they make a LINE group on the spot and share photos.
Then you don't have to send them via AirDrop or individually by message, everyone receives them.
So that's very convenient too, right.
And also, what's been increasing recently is official LINE accounts.
Many shops make them.
So not only does each individual person have LINE, but shops
and brands use LINE too.
And, for example,
If you add them as a friend, there's often some perk.
For example, at an izakaya, one free drink,
五百円オフクーポンとかがもらえるので、or you can get a 500 yen off coupon, so
Japanese people often add them as friends just for the coupons.
And when you become friends with Japanese people, definitely ask, oh, do you use LINE?
or let's exchange LINE.
But recently, this is just what I've felt,
LINEを聞くのって結構ハードルが高くなっているasking for LINE has become quite a high hurdle.
There are people who feel that way and don't want to add someone on LINE unless they're really close.
For example, some people absolutely don't want to add coworkers on LINE, or
あとはalso,
もう会うような人じゃなかったらLINEを追加したくないとかいろいろな人それぞれのそのハードルがあるんですがif it's someone you won't meet again, you don't want to add them on LINE, everyone has their own different threshold for that, but
if you feel like it might be a bit hard to ask for their LINE, try asking for their Instagram.
Especially people in their twenties, thirties, and even younger, teenagers,
it seems that nowadays many people don't exchange LINE anymore and only exchange Instagram.
So you all too, carefully observe the other person and think about whether to ask for their LINE,
or whether to ask for their Instagram.
It's a bit difficult, isn't it.
But it's okay.
And the second one, the second one is Yahoo! Transit.
There are other transfer guide apps,
have been using this Yahoo! Transit since I was in middle school.
And what this app is for is.
It's an app where you can check train transfers.
It's incredibly convenient.
I'm actually not very good with trains.
Especially when riding trains in Tokyo, there are all kinds of lines
existing in a complicated way, so I get confused.
例えばFor example,
山手線から何々線に乗り換えてその何々線からまた乗り換えて乗り換えて乗り換えてってなるとtransferring from the Yamanote Line to such-and-such line, and from that line transferring again and again and again, then
my head feels like it's going to explode.
And I'm sure you all would get confused too.
So this is what
calmly guides you until you reach your destination, that's this transfer guide app.
And Japanese trains.
They are so punctual that if they're even one minute late, an announcement plays inside the car.
If they say the train will come at this time, the train really comes at that time.
But as I mentioned earlier, there are just too many lines,
and even if it's not your first time, it's already like a maze.
Have you all ever done a maze, even a paper maze is fine, but
you really can't reach your destination, so let's rely on this app.
And for example,
Shinjuku Station in Tokyo has dozens of exits, so even locals get lost.
So the convenient thing about this app is
you can enter that you want to arrive at such-and-such station at 3 PM.
Then it calculates backwards for you, the app calculates it.
And, which train you should take
はもちろんその階段に近い車両、and of course the car close to the stairs,
例えば丸々駅だったらその電車の1号車に乗ってくださいとか8号車に乗ってくださいfor example, if it's such-and-such station, it tells you everything in detail like please ride in car No. 1 or ride in car No. 8
it tells you all the way down to those fine details.
And, ah,
今日は8号車に乗っておけば降りてすぐ改札に行けるとわかるのでsince you know that if you ride in car No. 8 today you can get off and go straight to the ticket gate,
when commuting or meeting up, Japanese people all ride in the designated car.
And the app properly tells you every time.
it tells you.
And, interestingly, there's also a hurry setting,
急いで設定って思うんですが、何かというと、例えば私もそうなんですが、結構速歩you might think, hurry setting?, but what it is, for example like me, I walk quite fast
That's how it is.
Not at a normal person's walking
スピードではなくて、もうその2倍ぐらいのスピードでとことことことこで歩いているので、速歩きの人はspeed, but walking briskly at about twice that speed, so for fast walkers
You can adjust it in the app.
Yes, you set it to hurried.
Then the app thinks, oh, this person walks fast, so
もうちょっとスピードを考慮して、taking the speed into account a bit more,
for example, you may be able to catch one faster train and shorten the time.
I find this really useful.
And, I also
I do walk fast, but
やっぱり初めて行く駅when it's a station I'm going to for the first time
I really don't know how to transfer
I temporarily set it back to normal or adjust it myself.
So, are you all impatient?
Are you always in a hurry?
Or are you laid-back?
Please let me know in the comments.
And by the way, well, I search for transfer and train information in this app, but.
Even Japanese people, when walking from the station to a shop to find the way
open Google Maps or Apple Maps and walk.
This transfer app only has train information, so when walking is involved I use a different app.
Yes、The third one is my absolute favorite, Mercari. Yes,
Have you all heard of Mercari?
If you live in Japan, you absolutely must download this.
It's like eBay or Poshmark in the US,
a flea market app, a free market app.
So it's a place where individuals register and interact with each other to sell and buy things.
What kind of app Mercari is, for example,
例えばfor example
Japanese people
all start using Mercari at once during moving or big cleaning season.
And the reason is that on Mercari, clothes and books you no longer use
それだけじゃなくて結婚式のand not only that, dresses worn only once for a wedding
二次会で一回だけ着たドレスとか買ったけど合わなかったコスメafter-party or cosmetics you bought but didn't suit you
are also listed a lot.
Many Japanese people handle things
すごく丁寧に扱う人が多いので梱包もショップみたいに綺麗でvery carefully, so the packaging is as neat as a shop's and
is enclosed when it arrives.
For example, I think gacha-gacha is popular lately, but
ガチャガチャで自分の欲しいガチャがif you didn't get the gacha you wanted
someone else might want it, so you sell it on Mercari.
Also, when there's a book I want.
I buy it used on Mercari and read it.
And when I finish reading, I sell it on Mercari again, and that cycle has started.
So, I think Mercari is a really great app.
Things you think you no longer need
Something that someone is looking for,
誰かがいらないと思っているものが自分がsomething that someone thinks they don't need can be exactly what you want right now, so I think it's an app that really matches that supply and demand well.
まさに今欲しいと思っているものだったりするので、その需要と供給をso I think it's an app that really wants to match that supply and demand.
I started Mercari during the pandemic, and I got really hooked on Mercari,
私がメルカリを始めたのはコロナ禍の時で、メルカリにめちゃくちゃハマってand as a result I decluttered my house.
and as a result I decluttered my house.
And I sold all of that on Mercari.
As a result, I sold about 300 items and made quite a lot of sales.
Recently I buy more than I sell, but there are some tricks.
And that trick is,
this happens to me a lot, but in Japan popular clothes sell out right away.
So even if I go to the store it's not there, and when I try to find it online it's already sold out, which has happened to me several times,
but it's a bit too early to give up thinking, oh it's sold out, I can't buy it anymore.
If you search Mercari for the clothing brand and name, it's usually listed.
And the price is often a bit higher or the same, but even so I'm just grateful I can buy it,
so that's how I've been using Mercari lately.
Number four,
Number four is Ikkyu and Tabelog for finding restaurants, which I've been using a lot lately.
Lately I use Ikkyu a lot, though.
I think there are probably more Tabelog users in Japan, so I'll introduce Tabelog together.
The answer to the quiz at the beginning was exactly this Tabelog.
In Japan, far more people trust Tabelog scores
than Google Maps ratings.
Tabelog's distinctive feature is how strict these scores are.
Everyone is very strict.
So on Google Maps you often see five-star, four-star ratings, right?
But Tabelog is also out of five points,
三点が普通で、three points is average,
and shops with 3.5 or higher are said to be in the top few percent of amazingly delicious restaurants.
なので、So,
Japanese people often look at Tabelog and say, oh,
that restaurant is 3.6 on Tabelog so it must be delicious.
And Ikkyu is a reservation app for restaurants for special occasions.
Ikkyu also carefully selects its restaurants, so it's very easy to use.
If it's listed on Ikkyu, I think, oh,
it must be delicious.
Another good point about Ikkyu is, for example, when booking a friend's birthday dinner or afternoon tea at a hotel,
if you use the Ikkyu app, you can get a free drink or priority booking for good window-side seats.
So when you're looking for delicious food in Japan, please try using Tabelog and Ikkyu
for different occasions.
And lastly, number five is PayPay.
Actually, I've never used PayPay myself,
まだ使ったことがないんですが、周りの友達家族がみんな使っているので紹介しようとbut all my friends and family around me use it, so I thought I'd introduce it.
思います。So I did a bit of research on this.
Japan used to be
昔の日本はa cash country, but now you can use credit cards and this PayPay at most stores.
PayPaya cash-based country, but now you can use credit cards and this PayPay at most stores.
So in this case, it means it's a cashless-friendly store.
So in this case, it means it's a cashless-friendly store.
It means it's a store that accepts cashless payments.
It means you don't necessarily have to bring cash.
The number one use for PayPay is, for example, of course you can use it when paying, but also for splitting the bill with friends
you can use it when doing that.
So, for example, everyone had a drinking party together.
One person pays all together by card,
and then everyone else says, 'I'll send my share via PayPay,' and sends money phone-to-phone right on the spot.
And the great thing about PayPay is that you can send it instantly with no fees, so it's very convenient.
Recently, even really street stalls around town,
or even vegetable vending machines from small farmers in the countryside.
you'll often find a QR code saying PayPay accepted.
When you pay, you'll hear the PayPay sound, so please listen for it in stores.
So, how was it, everyone?
Today I introduced 5 apps that Japanese people definitely use,
along with real-life ways to use them.
What I talked about today includes how to get coupons on LINE,
電車の車両選びをしてくれる乗り換えアプリとかa transfer app that even picks the train car for you,
メルカリでいらないものを売る方法、あとはhow to sell unwanted items on Mercari, and
食べログの3.5以上はもう激うま店っていう話とかhow I talked about how Tabelog ratings of 3.5 or higher mean amazing restaurants,
and finally, splitting the bill with PayPay.
All of these are sights you see every day living in Japan.
Are there similar apps or culture in your countries?
If you have an app you use for splitting bills in your country, please let me know in the comments.

summary time. So to wrap things up,summary time. So to wrap things up,
here is a quick summary of the five essential apps widely used in Japan today. So first, we discussed LINE, the dominant messaging platform in Japan. It's basically the WhatsApp of Japan, and beyond daily communication, businesses use it to offer discount coupons and group chats are routinely created to share photos after social gatherings instead of AirDropping each and every person that you are with that day. And interestingly, exchanging Instagram has also become a common initial step before sharing someone's LINE contact. So, when in doubt, ask for their Instagram rather than their LINE. And second, we covered the Yahoo Norikae app.Or the English name is Yahoo Transit Guide. So while Japan's rail system is exceptionally punctual, navigating major stations can be very complex. So I recommend this app. Um, this goes beyond basic scheduling. Um, it can even specify which train car you should take for closest transfer, and it can even tell you which stairs to take. So it's super super useful, especially in Tokyo. Then third, we had Mercari. Uh, I think this is available in the states now, but it's very popular in Japan. I love this app so much. It is where customers can sell to each other. It's very similar to like eBay and Poshmark, and it's commonly used for decluttering, or reselling lightly used apparel or clothing, and sometimes for trading collectibles like Pokemon cards. And items listed are typically well maintained, and it's usually packaged very neatly as well. So it's very nice to buy and sell on Mercari. And I like Mercari so much that during COVID, I sold around 300 items and really did a deep cleaning of my house at the time. And fourth, regarding dining, we highlighted Taberogu and Iku. So you may have heard of Taberogu. It's widely trusted for restaurant reviews in Japan, and it operates on a very rigorous rating scale where a 3.0 represents average quality, and anything above 3.5 indicates an exceptional dining experience. So the rating system is very rigorous compared to Google Maps or Apple Maps reviews. And for fine dining, special occasions.or what's popular nowadays afternoon tea, ah Ikkyu is the preferred reservation service, um often offering perks such as complimentary welcome drinks or nice seating that you can choose in advance, and finally we looked at PayPay, the leading digital payment service in Japan right now. I personally have not used it, but all of my friends and family use it, and it's widely utilized for cashless transactions and splitting group bills instantly without the fees. and like I said, I haven't used it before, but I believe it's quite similar to Venmo in the U.S.And for PayPay, you also utilize a QR code to initiate any kind of transaction. So, all in all, these are the five apps that Japanese people really use on a daily basis. And I hope this helps. See you in the next one. Bye.here is a quick summary of the five essential apps widely used in Japan today. So first, we discussed LINE, the dominant messaging platform in Japan.
