Yes, the moment my mind went blank, yes,
I was doing manzai on that old comedy show, Red Carpet, and there was a part where the story wouldn't move forward unless I gave the cue, but I completely forgot it and blanked out, like, whoa, time stopped.
I completely forgot it and blanked, whoa, time stopped.
At that moment, I hit Mashiko on the head saying, you're the one forgetting, aren't you.
Even though he's the one who forgot the material, he made it like it's my fault.
はい。Yes.
It was my fault, my mind went blank, yes, saying you're forgetting, aren't you, I got mad too, it's not me, no it's you, it's you, it's you, idiot, ah, then okay I'm bad, sorry, sorry, and it ended like that.
はい。Yes.
Beautiful.
People ask which one it was because they couldn't tell, but it was clearly me who forgot.
はい。Yes.
That was a long time ago, like 20 years ago.
But my mind really went completely blank, truly.
はい。Yes.
Mashiko Daiki?
Yeah, I guess it was about 10 years ago, when we were filming in the Amazon jungle in South America and got shot at by a tribe, I think.
Yes, that changed me.
Since I managed to get through that, now I can eat this delicious rice, back then I was eating bananas every day, grilled bananas, I was thinking I really want to eat this.
Delicious rice really, I truly think I'm glad I was born in Tochigi.
Yes, my mind went blank at that time.
Really, seriously.
はい。Yes.
I'm glad to be alive.
I'm really glad I'm alive.
はい。Yes.
What is the ultimate side dish that lets you eat bowl after bowl of rice?
A side dish.
A side dish, huh.
I have a lot of them.
Oh, you probably have a lot, right?
A lot.
It's fine.
Well, I have favorites depending on the season, but right now it's fuki miso, butterbur miso.
これ。This.
Fuki miso.
おお。Oh.
They sell it in jars.
Since it's fuki miso, when I go to roadside stations over in Shiki no Mori or Tochigi or around there, there's always jarred fuki miso, and there's also just the fuki buds, just the leaves.
I just love that stuff, I always look for it and eat it with rice wrapped in nori.
Yeah.
And also soy-sauce pickled chili peppers.
おお。Oh.
That's delicious.
That's strong-flavored, using chili peppers from around Odawara.
It's in a jar, I eat just a little bit of that.
Like raw egg over rice, instead of soy sauce I pour the soy sauce from that chili pepper pickle over it.
はい。Yes.
You're not really getting it, is that okay?
Well, I do tend to like mountain foods, really.
はい。Yes.
You know, for me.
はい。Yes.
How about you, Mr. Fukukura.
After all, a raw egg is the first thing that just slides right down together with it.
うん。Yeah.
Also kelp.
For me it's probably salted kelp.
うん。Yeah.
Salted kelp with a bit of soy sauce-like flavor.
I can eat that endlessly too.
うん。Yeah.
That's right, salted kelp.
はい。Yes.
It goes well with anything, doesn't it.
はい。Yes.
And, how about you, Ms. Aibe.
No, I really feel the same as you two.
はい。Yes.
Either egg over rice, or that kelp, like wood ear kelp.
はい。Yes.
And of course, nori seaweed with rice.
Nori.
はい。Yes.
Drizzling a little soy sauce on nori and wrapping it to eat, just that alone
really lets the deliciousness of the rice come through, I could eat bowl after bowl.
I love nori.
Well, that nori,
I really love nori and always keep it stocked, and when I go to Saga or over there I eat really good nori and that's delicious too, but if the nori is too good, when you wrap the rice it crisply cracks and breaks.
So if it's too cheap it gets soggy, so I buy nori that's just the right price.
I see.
With that, the rice wraps up nicely.
Ah, without being too crispy.
Right, right.
If it's too good, it crisply cracks and breaks.
I save that to eat at a different time, that's my particular preference.
That's what I do.
That's particular, isn't it.
Indeed.
I think it would also go really well with onigiri, or sushi, or fried rice.
What do you think.
The scenery of the northern part of the prefecture just comes to mind.
It reminds me of how as a kid I was always catching grasshoppers.
Every day, every day I'd go grasshopper catching with grandpa.
Like easily a thousand of them flying, right.
Really, the basket was crackling and jumping.
Really, the rice paddies.
That was our playground.
はい。Yes.
After all, grasshoppers eat good rice leaves, so they're healthy.
Grasshoppers grow well too.
そう。Yes.
The locusts have grown well too.
You skewer them like this on a stick.
通して。Skewer them.
And grill them over fire.
はい。Yes.
When you touch them a little, they crackle and writhe.
はい。Yes.
And that rice too.
I'm eating rice with that simmered locusts as a side dish.
うん。Yeah.
はい。Yes.
The rice is standing up.
Delicious.
It's delicious.
As expected of the land of Nasu.
お米。The rice.
はい。Yes.
It's delicious.
