Today I will talk about Halloween in Japan in Japanese.
Do you all like Halloween?
Halloween is every year on October 31st.
Originally it is a foreign festival, but now it is very popular in Japan too.
In Japan, many people dress up in costumes on Halloween day.
Dressing up means wearing different clothes than usual or becoming a character.
For example, witches, ghosts, anime characters, and so on.
On Halloween day, you might even meet zombies when you ride the train.
When I was a child, I think fewer people celebrated Halloween than now.
But now it's a big event that everyone loves.
In America, children go around to different houses, right?
And they say trick or treat and get candy.
But in Japan, there aren't many children who go around to different houses like in America.
Instead, in Japan, you can sometimes get candy at schools or events.
But you don't get as much candy as in America.
And when it comes to Halloween, it's ghosts and pumpkins, right?
Next, I'll talk about jack-o'-lanterns.
A jack-o'-lantern is a lantern made from a pumpkin.
You hollow out the pumpkin and make eyes and a mouth.
And you put a light inside.
The orange pumpkin has a scary face on it.
When Halloween season comes, there are lots of pumpkin decorations in Japanese shops and restaurants too.
They're very cute, aren't they?
I've made one myself, just once.
But pumpkins are very hard, so it took a really long time to make.
But when it was finished and I put a light inside, I made a one-of-a-kind jack-o'-lantern in the world and
I remember being very happy.
By the way, I've heard there are regions that use a different vegetable instead of pumpkin.
Next, I'll talk about Halloween events in Japan.
In Japan, when October comes, there are Halloween events in various places.
For example, theme parks and shopping malls.
At theme parks, they sometimes have special Halloween parades.
The staff and characters also wear Halloween costumes.
Restaurants and cafes also sell special food and drinks.
For example, pumpkin cake and cute Halloween cookies.
Even Starbucks has Halloween limited-edition drinks.
I love pumpkin, so when I see special Halloween food, I can't help but want to buy it.
Next, I'll talk about famous Halloween places in Japan.
Shibuya in Tokyo was one of the famous places for Halloween.
Every year many people gathered and enjoyed dressing up.
It was really fun to see people dressed as various characters.
But because there were so many people, there were also many problems.
For example, there were people who threw trash on the street or made noise loudly.
Because of that, dressing up ended up being banned.
I hope everyone can have a fun and safe Halloween.
And Halloween in Japan is gradually changing.
It wasn't as popular in the past, but now it has become an event that both children and adults can enjoy.
Halloween is not just a day to enjoy scary ghosts.
It is also a day to play with friends, eat special food, and become a different version of yourself.
Do you celebrate Halloween in your country?
Do you dress up in costumes or receive candy?
Have you ever worn a funny costume?
