Yes, hello everyone, I'm Sayaka, the host of the podcast that came in Japanese.
Uh, this podcast will bring you everyday life in Japan and real conversations with the concept of Ribuchapanizo.
Today, I was thinking of talking about something completely different, but this kid flew in so let's talk about her.
Um, now,
Uh, for those watching the video, the YouTube video podcast, listening, I think you understand, but right now, Natsu was passing by.
Natsu-chan, long time no see.
I haven't shown her in videos much recently, but today I'll talk about how I met Natsu.
Meeting Natsu was actually by chance, really really by chance, so like.
God or like this universe,
I thought maybe they sent Natsu to me, but I'll talk a bit about how I found her.
2023Well, I found Natsu, or rather picked her up, in 2023 I think. 2023
in the summer, I think it was July.
In July, that morning, that day was the day I was going to Kobe.
And since it was a day to go to Kobe for one night and two days, I woke up a little early in the morning and rented a car and was about to go by car.
And usually I don't wake up that early.
I'm not a morning person so I'm pretty late in the morning, but that day
unusually I woke up early in the morning and went outside the apartment building I lived in to go get the rental car.
At that time I was with my husband, and my husband suddenly said, huh,
子猫、子猫いるよって言ってて、there's a kitten, there's a kitten,
and I couldn't hear what he was saying and I couldn't see it.
My eyesight is bad so I didn't understand, and I didn't understand what my husband was saying either.
Because I had just woken up.
So I didn't understand, and when I said, hey let's go quickly, my husband said no, that's not it.
見て、Look,
ほら子猫がいるよって言って指をさしているから、そっちの方ちょっとこうやってね目細くして、えー見えないって言って近づいていったら、look, there's a kitten, he said pointing, so I squinted that way like this, said I can't see, and went closer,
a kitten about the size to fit in the palm of your hand was on the sidewalk.
It was curled up small like this, crouching.
Meow,
meow, meow, it kept saying, and I thought, what is such a tiny kid doing alone.
And, my husband is kind so he said it's dangerous here, and Japanese people would probably just ignore it even if they see it.
Other people passing by there would just ignore it.
Even if they see it they'd just think oh there's a cat and do nothing and go somewhere, so we have to help it, and,
その猫をこう手でね持ち上げて近くにあったhe lifted up that cat with his hands to nearby
um what, to near a tree nearby, well he moved it to a bit safer place.
And nearby it was still really so tiny it would fit in the palm of your hand so um.
I wondered, maybe the mother is still nearby, and it kept really
、ミャーミャーって本当に高い声で鳴いてるし、顔にも泥がついてたから、, meow meow crying in a really high voice, and there was mud on its face too, so
I thought maybe the mother is still nearby,
my husband and I went to look nearby a bit, but well cats run away if you go look for them, right.
I understand now, but I didn't understand at that time.
Well we went to look
けどいなかったbut she wasn't there
but, well I thought after a bit more time the mother might come looking for her, so we went to get the rental car first.
We went to get the rental car and came back
三十分後ぐらいかな、三十分ぐらい時間が経ってたんですけど、about thirty minutes later, about thirty minutes had passed,
まだ同じところにいて鳴いて鳴いてて、she was still in the same place crying and crying,
でも私と夫はまだね神戸に行く準備ができてなかったので、もうちょっと様子を見ようって言って部屋に戻ってbut my husband and I still weren't ready to go to Kobe, so we said let's watch a bit more and went back to the room
and well we prepare in the room, right.
And about an hour later we went outside again and she was still in the same place
ミャーミャーミャーって鳴いててまだ小さいから目が見えているのかよく分かんなかったけどcrying meow meow meow, and she was still so small I couldn't really tell if her eyes could see or not
Since the mother cat didn't seem to be around anymore, I just picked it up as it was,
and I picked it up, but that day we were going to Kobe and planning to stay overnight for one night and two days.
今日は自分たちで面倒見れないからwe couldn't take care of it ourselves that day, so
I asked a friend who was nearby to just watch it for one day, because this little one is pitiful, and they agreed to watch it,
I left the cat with them and went to Kobe.
We went to Kobe and then come back the next day, right.
I came back and went to pick up the cat, and its face was still dirty and I didn't know what to feed it, because I've never had a cat.
And, well, I brought it home, and I wondered if I could give it milk, but actually you're not supposed to.
I did give it some, but it seems like that was bad.
Because it upsets their stomach.
その日かその次の日にあの猫that day or the next day, that cat
まあ猫ちゃん連れて、拾ったばっかりだったからなんか病気持ってるかもしれないし、もしかしたら誰かwell, I took the kitten with me, since I had just picked it up it might have some illness, or maybe it had
の家から逃げちゃったかもしれない、チップ入ってるかなとかescaped from someone's house, I wondered if it had a microchip or not,
I didn't know, so I took it to the animal hospital.
And when I took it to the animal hospital, I don't have a car, so in like a backpack, in a bag
I put the kitten in,
I put the kitten in the bag, and it was just
meowing meow meow the whole time.
It was meowing, but while going shh shh, patting it, by bicycle
I took it to the animal hospital, and then at the animal hospital they weighed it, well this kitten's mother is a stray cat
, ah, right right right, so sorry, they weighed it, and at that time it was 400 grams.
It was super tiny, 400 grams.
Well, 400 grams means, what, it's lighter than a 500-milliliter plastic bottle.
Huh, is that right?
That's right, isn't it.
うん。Yeah.
It was really so tiny, it was incredibly cute.
But I didn't know if that apartment allowed cats,
私はまだいろんなところ旅行行きたいしなって思って、and I was thinking I still want to travel to lots of places,
I was thinking I had to either take it in myself or find someone to be its foster parent,
まあ病院に行ってそのwell, I went to the hospital and that
獣医さんお医者さん動物の医者さんのこと獣医って言うんですけど、獣医さんがthe veterinarian, the animal doctor is called a veterinarian, the veterinarian said
this kitten is probably the baby of a stray cat.
And they said maybe its mother forgot it and left it behind,
なんかそれを聞いて涙出そうになって、えそんなことあるのと思って、and hearing that I almost cried, thinking huh, does that happen,
まあでもなんかよくあるってねその獣医さんは言ってたんですけど、well, the vet said it happens quite often though,
うん忘れられちゃって、であともう一つなんかyeah, it was left behind, forgotten, and also one more thing,
尻尾が折れてるんですよなんか尻尾がまっすぐじゃなくてちょっと折れてるんですけど、えこれはどうしたんですかits tail is bent, like its tail isn't straight and is a little bent, so I asked what happened,
って言ったらand they said
probably when it was born it came out bent, but there's no problem at all so it's fine to leave it like this.
They said it doesn't hurt, so I thought oh, I see,
本当にずっとずっと鳴いてて、ミャーミャーってずっと鳴いてて、it was really crying all the time, meowing meow meow all the time,
I took it home and thought I should look for a foster parent, I have to look, I want to travel and I might not be able to take responsibility,
I was thinking I had to look, but already at that point
可愛いから愛情が湧いちゃって、もう可愛くてit was so cute that I felt love for it, it was so cute,
I felt sad thinking about it going to someone else, and I wanted to raise it properly,
so I talked about it with my husband many times.
My husband told me Sayaka could decide, but I had really grown attached to it, so, oh, well,
あの。um.
I said I want to keep it, I want to raise it, and so we decided to keep it.
That was how we met.
So if my husband hadn't found her, we wouldn't have met Natsu, and that day
If we hadn't planned to go to Kobe, we wouldn't have woken up so early that morning, so we might never have met. When I think about that, it feels like a miracle.
And well
And well
We decided to keep her, decided to keep her, and from there, okay we have to decide on a name
We decided to choose a name, but since Natsu is white
My husband said Snow, Snowflake, I think, he said Snowflake-chan, but
I thought that name is long
Snowflake, and on top of that we picked her up in such a hot summer.
I thought, no way, no to that,
Since she's a cat we picked up in summer, in midsummer, Natsu, Natsu is good, I kept saying Natsu,
I kept calling her Natsu, Natsu, and Natsu won, so her name became Natsu.
By the way, when we picked her up, her face was dirty with mud and dirt, and
Yes, dirty with dirt, and we had her checked for fleas and bugs, and sure enough she had them, so for the first three days
I forgot exactly how many days, but for about the first three days we kept her shut in a cardboard box
つけてもらった薬と一緒にwith the medicine they gave us
We had to wait for the fleas, the bugs, to fall off, and she kept meowing in the cardboard box
and I kept thinking, I'm so sorry.
That was really hard.
I kept thinking, I'm sorry, you weren't born to be locked up in a cardboard box like this, I'm sorry for locking you up
I really, really felt that.
Well, but
The fleas properly fell off and we let her out of the cardboard box, and from then on she was just really adorable.
Looking back now, she's already three years old, but
When she was tiny she really followed me everywhere, for example when I was brushing my teeth or washing my face in the washroom.
It hurt so much, but she'd hook her claws into my clothes and climb up, clack clack clack, and sit on my head or here on my shoulder
and watch everything.
She was so cute, I wish I could go back to that time, that kitten phase was insanely cute.
Also when she ran, she couldn't run straight, she'd run kind of sideways, like what, like a ninja
Like a crab walk
I thought that was weird, and cats can jump up high, but I didn't know that kittens are still too small and
できないってこと知らなくて、can't do it,
I didn't know around when they'd be able to jump either, but at that time
Well, you watch them grow, right.
At that time, for example from the sofa
Oh, she jumped from here to here on the sofa, or oh she's on top of the table, things like that were really fun.
It was so much fun.
But what was really difficult was, I'd had a dog before, but I'd never had a cat, so I didn't know what to do for her.
Like how to play with her, oh, well, playing was okay I guess.
Yeah, I think we played a lot, but food was
I bought and tried all kinds of cat food, but all of it, she'd
こうね土を掘るようにガリガリガリガリって掘り出しちゃったりとかいらないみたいな感じで食べなかったりしたから、scratch at it like digging dirt, scratch scratch scratch, digging it out, or act like she didn't want it and wouldn't eat it, so
I wondered what on earth she would eat, I really searched for an answer.
Yeah, I thought about it a lot, it was tough.
She ate Churu though.
You know, that paste-type treat, cats love that, right.
Well, giving her things like that and various foods, we raised her, and she gradually grew bigger, and from about half a year later,
About half a year later, around January, I think.
Well, around January she suddenly started meowing in a really loud voice.
Her voice was just really, really loud,
So loud that I thought the people in the surrounding apartments could hear it and it might bother them, she started crying with such an amazingly loud voice,
Like, what is this, what just started,
I thought, and I looked up all sorts of things online
I wondered if it was heat.
What was it, like, um.
In heat, I wonder if her body gets hot.
And, well, Natsu hadn't had surgery by then, and I didn't even know that kind of thing happens, so that's when I first learned about it,
Um, spaying, well, since Natsu is a girl,
そのThat I saw that I had to get her spayed so she couldn't get pregnant, well, not had to, but that it was better to do it,
Oh, then I thought I have to take her in, and I took her to a different animal hospital, and that animal hospital was a really good place,
The vet there also volunteered doing surgeries for stray cats in the neighborhood,
So they treated her very carefully, and she had her spay surgery there, and it's since that surgery,
Well, since then, or rather she's always been timid, she's scared of everything, timid and fearful, so yeah,
Taking her to the animal hospital is pretty hard too, she gets really angry,
She flies all around the room, so it's quite difficult,
When she came home after that surgery, she had on what they call an Elizabethan collar,
To keep her from touching around her face, this round thing,
She had this plastic thing around her face,
With that on, and on top of that she was wearing a post-surgery suit,
Well, because she was wearing the surgery suit, she couldn't lick or touch the wound,
Anyway, she apparently really hated this plastic Elizabethan collar, it was so stressful, she started hissing like I'd never seen before,
I was like, what should I do, what should I do, I thought she'd gone crazy,
Just watching that almost made me cry, and I thought, oh, she's wearing the post-surgery clothes so it's fine, and I took it off for her,
There were so many first-time things, and so many times I wondered what I should do.
Well, with all that, lots of things happened, but even now
We're still living together,
We've moved together many times too, and I feel bad because she's a cat,
When my husband and I go on trips, my family helps out and looks after her together with us.
There's just one thing I'm a little worried about.
Well, not one thing, there are two things I'm worried about, one is that she's really timid so
When someone comes over she immediately goes hiss,
And when I have to take her to the hospital for checkups, or
Like when she needs shots, well, there are times you have to take them to the hospital, right.
At times like that she really goes wild,
She keeps hissing so loudly that everyone in the hospital can hear,
I've taken her to various hospitals, and at one hospital they even said, this one's a handful,
So I wonder about that, like always.
With just one cat?
Wondering if she's lonely alone so I should get another one,
I've thought about it before, and I still think about it now,
I still think about it sometimes, but
Like, you know,
なんかWhat if their personalities don't match and she keeps hissing and gets stressed, or
There are so many things I don't know about cats, so if any cat-owning
Moms and dads, professionals listening to this, please tell me.
What should I do.
What should I do.
Well, that kind of thing happened too, and the second thing I'm worried about is, just around
about half a year ago.
えっとum
発作が起きるようになっちゃって発作っていうのはいきなり体のコントロールができなくなってhe started having seizures, and by seizure I mean suddenly he can't control his body and
あの失神しちゃう失神っていうかまあ発作だね発作がアタックかアタックがhe faints, well, it's not fainting, it's a seizure, a seizure, an attack, an attack
出てくるようになっちゃって初めてなった時は本当にそんなことあるって知らなかったからstarted happening, and the first time it happened I really didn't know that could happen
I didn't know, so I picked him up and thought he was going to die
Natsu, Natsu
こっちthis way
こっちこっちこっちってもう本当体叩いちゃって余計パニック起こしちゃったみたいなんですけどthis way, this way, this way, I actually ended up hitting his body and it seemed like it made him panic even more
それがand that
一分ぐらい一分も続いてないかな発作が一分ぐらい起きてそこから不安になったのでまた病院に連れて行ってfor about a minute, maybe not even a full minute, the seizure lasted about a minute, and after that I got worried so I took him to the vet again
like three times, blood tests.
をしてdid
病院大嫌いなのに連れて行かなきゃいけなくてeven though he hates the vet, I had to take him
I took him and had blood tests done, and well, there was nothing bad in the blood, so
MRIを撮ろうってなってMRIを撮りにまた違う病院に行ってthey said let's take an MRI, so I went to a different hospital to get an MRI
I got it taken, but there too they said well, there's no brain disease
頭の病気ないならよかったif there's no brain disease then that's good
I thought that, but you know, you end up looking it up online anyway
ネットで調べると犬はてんかんてんかんってあの epilepsywhen you look it up online, dogs have epilepsy, epilepsy, you know, epilepsy
I saw that dogs often have epilepsy, but cats often have brain disease, so
I thought, what if it's a disease, and for that whole week
that was the busiest time of my life.
時期だったんですけど、だからもう本当に寝てなかった寝ずに、it was that time, so I really wasn't sleeping, without sleeping,
Natsu had his first seizure at around 10 at night,
I was in a total panic, and I thought he was going to die, so I was about to cry too,
I held him the whole time, even though he hates being held,
Natsu hates being held, but I held him and waited for him to calm down, looked up an animal hospital open at night,
そこに電話して今どうしたらいいですかって聞いて、まあその血液検査とかMRIを撮ってもらって、called there and asked what should I do right now, and well, I had blood tests and an MRI taken,
まあwell
何も脳のね病気がなかったから良かったんですけど、じゃあその発作なんなのってなった時に、there was no brain disease, so that was good, but then when it came to what is this seizure,
あのその獣医さんがね、多分だけど特発性てんかんじゃないかなって言われて、ただなんかそのum, that vet said, probably, it's idiopathic epilepsy, but like
またその発作ガタガタガタガタって全身コントロールが効かなくなっちゃう発作がまたまたif that seizure again, that shaking shaking shaking where he loses control of his whole body, if it happens again within half a year
起きたら半年以内にif it happens again
また起きたらその可能性が高いですねって言われてもうそこからはさif it happens again, then that possibility is high, they told me, and from then on, you know
I was like please don't happen, please don't happen, I thought please don't have a seizure because it's so pitiful, but it did happen
6月に起きちゃってit happened in June
でその時はand at that time
I consulted over the phone with the vet
I asked, it happened again, what should I do, and they said
まあちょっと様子見ましょうか24時間以内にまたあったら明日連れてきてくださいって言われたんですけどwell, let's watch him for now, if it happens again within 24 hours, bring him in tomorrow, but
well.
it didn't happen, and then three months passed, it became September.
in September, you know, it happened again.
every time it happens I can't bear to watch, it's just too pitiful.
で本人もand he himself too
After that seizure happens, he's just spaced out, like, what happened kind of
He's just spaced out, so I don't know what I can do for him and it's sad,
It's really sad and I'm like, what should I do, but, well, while talking with the vet
Whether we'll go with medication or what we'll do, that's how it feels.
If there's anyone who has a cat with epilepsy, please let me know.
I just don't know what to do anymore
But, I don't want to stress Natsu out either, but for Natsu.
Yeah, I want him to live a long life, so I'm wondering what I should do.
Yeah, things have been a bit gloomy lately, but, um
Well, well, it has gotten a bit gloomy, but,
Yeah, with epilepsy, you know, when you're feeling unwell, you can say so yourself, well, we're human after all
You can say it yourself so that's fine, but when a baby or an animal is sick
They can't talk, they can't talk and they're such vulnerable
Beings that you have to protect,
And they can't tell you what they're feeling or what pain they're in, so that makes me sad.
Yeah, well, but.
Yeah, so, Natsu has that, so that's a bit of a worry, but if anyone out there has a cat like that, please let me know
Please, really tell me.
Well, right, now he's three years old, three years and how many months, seven, uh, six seven eight nine ten,
Now he's about three years and four months old, about three years and four months, and I think he's calmed down quite a bit compared to before.
But he's cute every day, Natsu, together
He won't sleep with me, but since it's gotten a bit cold lately, he's been sleeping at my feet.
Well, when he sleeps at my feet, I can't move so it's a bit cramped, but well, that's fine.
Yeah, well, today, when I started talking at the beginning.
Natsu showed up on the screen of the YouTube video, so I thought I'd talk about him and suddenly started talking about Natsu.
