How Kanji Were Formed | Intermediate Japanese Comprehensible Input (CI)
にほんごのじかん | Japanese Comprehensible Input (CI)こんにちは。Hello.
今日は漢字の動画です。Today's video is about kanji.
漢字の成り立ちについて話します。I'll talk about the origins of kanji.
成り立ちというのは、どうやって作られたかということです。'Origins' means how they were made.
漢字の成り立ちには4つの種類があります。There are four types of kanji origins.
今日はその4つを紹介したいと思います。Today I'd like to introduce those four.
皆さんが漢字を覚えるときのヒントになったり、初めて見る漢字の読み方をI hope it will be a hint when you memorize kanji, and help you
予想するのに役立つと嬉しいです。guess the readings of kanji you see for the first time.
じゃあ始めましょう。Well, let's get started.
漢字の成り立ち、まず1つ目は象形文字です。For kanji origins, the first one is pictographs.
象形文字が一番簡単です。Pictographs are the easiest.
象形文字は、絵から字になったものです。Pictographs are characters that came from pictures.
山、川、木、口などがそうです。Like mountain, river, tree, mouth, and so on.
漢字で書くとWritten in kanji,
こうですね。it's like this.
以前こちらの動画で紹介した漢字は、すべて象形文字ですね。All the kanji I introduced in this video before are pictographs.
次、2つ目は指事文字。Next, the second type is ideographs.
これは、This is,
目に見えないinvisible to the eye,
形のないものとか、things without shape, or
上、下みたいな位置を表す言葉を、線やwords expressing positions like up and down, represented with lines and
点などの記号で表した漢字です。symbols like dots.
例えば上という漢字。For example, the kanji for 'up'.
線があって、その基準の線よりも上に点があります。There's a line, and there's a dot above that base line.
この記号から、上という漢字ができました。From this symbol, the kanji for 'up' was created.
下も同じです。It's the same for 'down'.
今度は線よりも下に点がある。This time the dot is below the line.
これが下という漢字になりました。This became the kanji for 'down'.
中もそうです。'Middle' is also like that.
四角のIn a square,
真ん中に線を引きます。draw a line in the center.
これ、真ん中の中という字です。This is the character for 'middle', meaning center.
はい、指事文字は、目に見えない、形のないものを、記号で表した文字。Yes, ideographs are characters that represent invisible, shapeless things with symbols.
次、3つ目は会意文字です。Next, the third type is compound ideographs.
会意文字といいます。They are called compound ideographs.
これは、2つ以上のThese are kanji made by combining two or more
意味を組み合わせて、1つの漢字を作ったものです。meanings to make one kanji.
お日様の日と月。The sun 'hi' and the moon.
ちなみにBy the way,
これとこれは象形文字なんですけど。these two are pictographs, but.
日と月を合わせると、明るいという字になります。When you put sun and moon together, it becomes the character for 'bright'.
お日様は明るいです。The sun is bright.
月も明るいです。The moon is also bright.
だから2つ合わせて明るいになります。So the two together mean bright.
これは人偏といいます。This is called the person radical.
人偏は人を表しています。The person radical represents a person.
これは人という意味を持つ漢字のパーツです。This is a kanji part that has the meaning of person.
これは木ですね。This is a tree.
はい。Yes.
人という意味の部分と、木。The part meaning person, and tree.
この2つの意味を合わせると、これは休むという漢字になります。When you combine the meanings of these two, this becomes the kanji for "to rest."
人が木のそばで休憩する、休む。A person resting by a tree, to rest.
だからこの字は休むですね。So this character means "to rest."
それからこの字。And then this character.
実はこれも人を表しています。Actually, this also represents a person.
人という意味があります。It has the meaning of person.
で、こっちは目ですね。And this one here is an eye.
人が目を使ってすること、見る、ですよね。What a person does using eyes, to see, right?
はい。Yes.
こんな風にLike this,
2つ、もしくはそれ以上の、意味を持つパーツが組み合わさってできた漢字が、会意文字です。Kanji made up of two, or more, parts with meaning combined together like this are called associative compound characters.
以前のこちらの動画で紹介した漢字は、会意文字ですね。The kanji I introduced in this previous video were associative compound characters.
最後に紹介するのは形声文字です。The last type I'll introduce is the phono-semantic compound characters.
さっきの会意文字は、意味を持つパーツがいくつか組み合わさってできた漢字でした。The associative compound characters from before were kanji made by combining several parts that have meaning.
今度、形声文字は、意味を表す部分と、音、読み方を表す部分Now, phono-semantic compound characters are kanji made by combining a part that represents meaning and a part that represents sound, or reading,
が合わさってできた漢字です。combined together.
実は漢字のほとんどは形声文字なんだそうです。Actually, most kanji are said to be phono-semantic compound characters.
例えばこの字。For example, this character.
青という漢字です。This is the kanji for blue, "ao."
青にはもう1つ読み方があります。"Ao" has one more reading.
別の読み方があります。It has another reading.
これ、「せい」とも読むんですよ。This is also read as "sei."
これ、「せい」です。This is "sei."
覚えておいてくださいね。Please remember that.
皆さん、この字は知ってますか?Everyone, do you know this character?
これ、晴れですね。This is "hare," clear weather.
晴れ。Hare.
晴れ、曇り、雨の晴れです。It's the "hare" in hare, kumori, ame — sunny, cloudy, rainy.
この字も実はもう1つ読み方があります。This character also actually has one more reading.
そう、日本語の漢字は、音読み、訓読みといって、Yes, Japanese kanji have on-reading, kun-reading,
だいたい2種類か、それ以上読み方があるんですよね。they generally have about two or more different readings.
これも実は「せい」と読むんです。This one is actually also read as "sei."
晴れた天気のことを晴天って言ったりします。We say "seiten" for clear, sunny weather.
晴天。Seiten.
形声文字は、さっき、意味を表す部分と音を表す部分を組み合わせてできた漢字と言いました。I said earlier that phono-semantic compound characters are kanji made by combining a part that represents meaning and a part that represents sound.
この漢字、左側は意味を表しています。In this kanji, the left side represents the meaning.
お日様の日ですね。It's the "hi" for sun.
で、右側が音、読み方を表しています。And the right side represents the sound, the reading.
だからこれと同じ、「せい」と読むんです。So it is read the same as this, "sei."
じゃあ皆さんにクイズです。So here's a quiz for you all.
これらの漢字は何と読むでしょう?How do you read these kanji?
わかりますか?Do you know?
これ全部、この字が含まれていますね。They all contain this character, don't they?
だから、これもこれもこれも全部「せい」と読みます。So this one, this one, and this one are all read as "sei."
他にも例を挙げると、この字。To give another example, this character.
これ、同じという漢字です。This is the kanji for "onaji," same.
「同じ」のもう1つの読み方は「どう」です。The other reading of "onaji" is "dou."
例えば、同じ職場で働いている人のことを、同僚って言ったりしますね。For example, people who work at the same workplace are called "douryou," colleagues.
同じ職場の人、同僚です。People at the same workplace, colleagues.
同僚。Colleagues.
同僚の同です。This is the "do" as in "colleague".
はい、じゃあこれらの文字は何と読むでしょうか?Okay, then how do you read these characters?
わかりますね。You know this, right?
はい、これも全部「どう」と読みます。Yes, these are all read as "do" as well.
こちら側が意味を表していて、こちら側が音、読み方を表しています。This side represents the meaning, and this side represents the sound, the reading.
最後にもう1個。One last one.
これは「こう」と読みます。This is read as "ko".
交通の交です。It's the "ko" in "kotsu" (traffic).
バスとか電車のことを交通機関って言いますね。We call buses and trains public transportation, right?
交通の交。The "ko" in traffic.
じゃあこれは何と読むでしょう?So how do you read this?
はい、そうです。Yes, that's right.
これも全部「こう」と読みます。These are also all read as "ko".
ここが音を表しています。This part here represents the sound.
もちろん例外もあります。Of course, there are exceptions.
すべての漢字がこのルールに当てはまるというわけじゃありません。Not all kanji fit this rule.
例外もあります。There are exceptions.
でも、知っておくとすごく便利だと思うので、ぜひ覚えといてください。But I think it's really useful to know, so please remember it.
はい、今日は漢字の4つの成り立ち、Yes, today we talked about the four origins of kanji,
象形文字、指事文字、会意文字、形声文字を紹介しました。pictographs, simple ideographs, compound ideographs, and phono-semantic compounds.
今日はここまでです。That's all for today.
バイバイ。Bye-bye.
