Here's a tip.
Today is about public restrooms.
Hi everyone, how are you?
あのねYou know,
Today, well, since I'm talking about toilets,
well, I'll talk about some slightly vulgar things, so please forgive me for that.
You know, there's this thing called confidence, right?
Like, kind of,
人としてas a person,
生きていってこう自信があったり、なんか自信がなくなったり、as you live your life, sometimes you have confidence, sometimes you lose confidence,
やる気が出たりやる気がなくなったりでそういうのが結構心理的にこうyour motivation goes up and down, and those things are quite psychologically
you know, related to each other, right?
Like, you know.
Well, when you leave the house, put on your shoes, leave home, and walk down the street,
なんかこう胸を張って歩けるときとなんとなく道の端をコソコソと歩く時あるわけですよねthere are times when you can walk with your chest out, and times when you kind of sneak along the edge of the road, right?
And probably that's, like, psychological,
あるんでしょうねなんかこう例えばですよあるサラリーマンがyou know, for example, say a salaryman,
あのとてもいいピッチができたとで上司や同僚からもすごいねテッペ君と言われてlike, he gave a really great pitch, and his boss and coworkers said, "Wow, Teppei!"
And then lunchtime comes, and he's like, "Okay, maybe I'll go buy a bento or something,"
and when he goes outside, it's different from usual, you know, his back is straight.
You know, walking slowly with big strides, right down the middle of the road, like, "Alright,
I'm doing great," like, the presentation he was worried about went well and got good reviews,
And at times like that, he must be walking proudly down the middle of the road. Yes,
Compared to that, like,
失敗をしたりなんかこううまくいかないなんかしかも自分のこう怠け癖のせいでwhen you've failed or things aren't going well, and moreover it's because of your own laziness,
そういう時は多分道の端をなんかとぼとぼと下を向いてうつむきながらねat times like that, you're probably walking along the edge of the road, trudging along, looking down, hanging your head,
あ俺はダメだなと自信なくなって歩いてたりするわけですよねlike, "Ah, I'm no good," having lost confidence as you walk, right?
And the example I just gave was, well, a company example, but I,
basically, you know, I don't really have that kind of thing.
Like, there's not really a "Yes, today's lesson went great" or anything like that,
well, well, that itself might be a problem, but, well, put positively, there's no difference.
Because every day is just normal, you know.
Every day there's nothing extremely like "Yes!" and nothing like "I'm terrible."
I'm just living my daily life.
The podcast is always just okay quality too, you know. Nihongo con Teppei
is all about continuing to put out just okay quality, that's the concept, you know.
It's always an 80-point ramen shop.
I never get 100 points, but I never get 0 points either, you know.
So, well, if I keep consistently putting out around 70, 80 points,
60well, maybe it's not even 80 points? 60
点ぐらいかな?points or so?
I don't know, I don't know.
That's not for me to decide, so I don't know, but, I don't know, well, my daily life is pretty uneventful.
Well, it's always the same, there's no drama like that, right?
So for someone like me, when do I feel that kind of,
like, vitality, feel life force? Well, you know, it's public toilets.
I kind of realized this, and today I want to talk about this.
Basically, I always use the toilet at my own home, you know, I use the toilet.
Every day I wake up in the morning and first go to the toilet, then drink coffee, then go during lessons, and I always sit down, you know.
In my own toilet, I even tell my kids, sit down, don't do it standing up.
Well, at home I’m in charge of cleaning the toilet, pretty much like most of the other cleaning.
And since I clean the toilet often, I notice that when the kids go standing up, it splashes a bit and gets a little dirty.
And I myself, on TV or something,
I saw that toilets actually get dirty because men pee standing up, and since then I've started doing it sitting down.
And well, my kids also go sitting down, so-called a bit domesti-
あの家畜化ですよね、自分を家畜化したドメスティフィケーションっていうのthat domestication, you know, I domesticated myself, this domestication,
I made myself into a dome-domestic animal. uh,
I domesticated myself.
What I'm saying is wild animals should go standing.
They should go standing, right. Wild humans
はね。.
Well, if you're a man, you're made to be able to go standing up, you know.
There's no point in deliberately sitting down, right.
In the case of men.
When you go outside, of course you go standing up.
For example at a campsite, like, oh, there's no toilet.
Well, campsites in Japan usually have toilets, but say overseas, for example, when you're camping,
Well, a barbecue would be fine too, but in the woods or something, and then let's go pee.
Somehow instinctively you go to a tree.
Near a tree.
This is probably the same for dogs, somehow hiding by a tree.
I wonder why.
Maybe so as not to be spotted by bears or something.
I don't know, but you go by a tree, right.
When I was a kid too, the tree at the shrine, well, the tree at a shrine is quite a sacred tree.
Probably.
Probably it must be a sacred tree close to the gods or something, and I was peeing on it all the time.
So I should have been cursed ever since, bad things should have kept happening ever since, but for that, it's not a bad life.
Anyway, when I was a kid I always peed toward trees.
So you do it standing up.
You wouldn't deliberately sit down, right, when you pee outside, men don't sit, right.
So doing it standing up is somehow instinctive.
Well, dogs are like that too, by a tree, they lift one leg and go pee, right.
And it's kind of like that, you just sort of go.
And, public restrooms too, basically you go standing up.
Men's toilets, I think many women don't know this, well, I don't know how many women are listening to this now,
Well, the men's toilet, well,
the pee ones and the poop ones are separated, well, the pee ones you use standing, well, the poop ones you use sitting.
Well, there aren't many people who poop standing up.
You can tell if you imagine it.
But in the case of pee, you can do it standing or sitting.
But, well, for the most part, the big one, the big side is also quite partitioned off.
In the case of men, well, more than half of the toilets are for peeing.
There are fewer for the big, well, poop use.
So compared to women, the lines are certainly shorter.
There are fewer lines.
Because there are more for pee.
But when you have a stomachache, it's pretty tough.
The big side is always crowded.
There's always a line.
So, just to pee, you line up in that queue and go out of your way into that poop-smelling place.
Well well well, women probably wouldn't get this, but for men, you know, the stall, the private stall toilet is basically for poop, so it smells like poop.
For women, they also go in to pee, so it doesn't necessarily always smell like poop.
If the person before you didn't poop, it might not smell, but for men, going into a stall basically means the guy before you pooped, so it absolutely smells like poop.
So nobody would go out of their way into such a place just to pee, right.
So you go to the standing toilets for peeing.
So, there there's no poop smell.
There's a strong smell of pee, but no poop smell.
Absolutely.
That's also a structural thing.
Structurally, for a poop smell to come from a men's standing urinal,
that's just structurally impossible.
That's socially impossible.
This is humanity having
なんか僕のイタリアの生徒がね、先生あの高級の公衆トイレはローマ時代にはすでにありましたとか言って、マジでとビビったんですけど、like my Italian student said, teacher, high-end public toilets already existed in Roman times, and I was like really, I was shocked, but,
in this long history of public toilets since that era.
There's absolutely no poop smell coming from the men's standing urinals.
That would be weird, it's structurally impossible.
There's just a strong smell of pee.
And there you spread both legs, take it out and pee, but what I noticed is
for example when you're out for a long time, like you're out from morning to night all day, that happens sometimes, right.
Almost never for me, almost never, but it does happen occasionally.
For example, you leave home in the morning and go to various places in the morning, and eat lunch outside,
and eat dinner outside too, like watch a movie, and get home really late at night, that happens sometimes.
About once a year.
Well, not once, maybe two, two or three times a year I'm out from morning to night all day
And on those days I've probably gone to public toilets like ten times
なんでその後なんかねそのそういう一日を過ごすと僕はなんかすごく自信が溢れてるのand after that, after spending a day like that, I feel somehow overflowing with confidence
So this goes back to the first story where the salaryman gave a great pitch
で道の真ん中ドドドと歩いてよっしゃみたいななってる状態が僕にとってはand he's walking right down the middle of the road like yeah, that state is for me
一日中外に行って公衆トイレに行きまくってなんかbeing outside all day and going to public toilets over and over and like
I'm like
yeah — I won't say I'm a man in this politically correct world, but I go yeah.
I don't know why that is.
Why is that.
Probably, somewhere I'm losing confidence.
Like I'm somehow becoming less wild.
Like me, I'm always at my home toilet
sitting down, holding it so I don't spill even a drop.
And keeping the toilet clean.
And pulling up my pants and toddling around the house like usual, you know.
Like I'm totally becoming a chihuahua, a chihuahua man.
But when I'm out all day using all kinds of dirty public toilets, smelling that sour smell, ten or twenty times
relieving myself.
And then like.
On the way home.
I'm like I'm strong, I'm strong, like a bear man, or
I become a wild animal, like rawr.
Really stepping all over pee, smelling pee all over, I feel like I've become stronger.
That is probably from smelling too much of this acidic smell, like the alkaline and acidic in the body,
アシッドとね、このアルカリがこう混ざってるあの多分体の中がこうなんかこうthe acid and, you know, this alkali mixing together, like probably inside the body it's somehow like
it's getting cleaned up, I wonder.
臭い臭いをかぎすぎて、from smelling the stink too much,
なんか体の中の悪いバイ菌を悪いバクテリアをこの強烈な酸の臭いでlike the bad germs inside the body, the bad bacteria, with this intense acid smell
I wonder if it's disinfecting them.
It makes me feel so refreshed that I think that.
I feel confidence welling up, I want to spread both legs wide and walk, that's how it feels.
Probably, after all, it's about posture too.
When you pee in that filthy, piss-covered place,
like, I don't know if it's a kid or an old man, but it's dripping quite a bit, it's pretty dirty there.
So to avoid stepping on it, you have to spread both legs wide open and do it properly.
And, in that kind of so-called squat-like position, you're doing squat-like things like ten or twenty times a day.
And, time-wise too, each time it's about thirty seconds, or when it's long you take it slow for about a minute.
And like a Hindu squat, or like a squat, a kind of
浅めのスクワットをしたもんね、それを一日にやっぱり十回とか二十回やってるから足腰のこうトレーニングにもなるしね姿勢も変わるshallow squat, and since you're doing that like ten or twenty times a day, it trains your legs and hips and changes your posture too
あのよちよち歩いてるんじゃなくて、もう両足ガバッと開いてねあの歩いてるわけ、堂々とねyou're not toddling around, you're walking with both legs spread wide open, proudly
So if your walk becomes confident, then your spirit also becomes confident like, come on, bring it on, anyone —
とね思うわけですよ向かってくるやついたらもう蹴りを結構くらわしてやるとyou think, you know, if someone comes at you you'll give them a good kick
The pee of thousands of people stuck to the soles of your shoes, you'll smash that into their face too
with a kick, you'll kick them up, that's how motivated you are.
With that kind of spirit you can walk through Shibuya.
Yes, proudly.
So everyone too, when you've lost energy and want to be confident,
あの会社で素晴らしいピッチをやったりとかね、あの車のセールスマンだったら一台二台車売ったりとか、まあそういうlike when you do a great pitch at work, or if you're a car salesman selling one or two cars, well, without doing
難しいことをしなくても一日中外にいてあの公衆便所such difficult things, just being outside all day and using those public toilets
朝から夜までずっと使えばそれぐらいの自信は得られるっていうfrom morning to night all the time, you can gain that much confidence —
that's just the kind of life hack, or like a tip, that I wanted to talk about today.
Yes, that was half-true, half-lie Japanese with Kon Teppei.
See you again.
