Yes, hello everyone. I'm Reira from Bite Size Japanese.
How are you all doing?
This podcast is a podcast where you can learn natural Japanese as if talking with a friend.
Are you all resting properly lately?
I think there are quite a lot of busy people,
結構ね、忙しい人が多いと思うんだけど、but even on a busy day at work, for example about 15 minutes in a day
コーヒーやお茶を飲んでね、making time to forget about work for a bit and rest
Do you all make that kind of time?
Are you all making that kind of time properly?
I wonder, please think about it.
In a busy day with work and all sorts of things,
10分20分ぐらいコーヒーを飲みながら、まあコーヒーが苦手だったら好きなお茶でも、まあ水でも何でもいいんだけど、for about 10 or 20 minutes while drinking coffee, well if you don't like coffee then your favorite tea, or water, anything is fine,
ちょっとjust a little,
デスクを離れて、まあできれば庭とかね、外に出てソファにでも座ってleave your desk, and if possible go outside to the garden or somewhere and sit on a sofa
ボーっとする、仕事のことを忘れて、まあね外の景色を見て美味しい飲み物を飲んでボーっとする、and zone out, forget about work, look at the scenery outside and drink something delicious and just space out,
そういう時間があればなんか一日がもっと素敵になるような気がしませんか?don't you feel like having that kind of time would make your day so much nicer?
What do you think?
That's what I think.
So lately, about three times a day,
まあだいたい二時間三時間集中して仕事をした後には私はキッチンに行ってお茶を作って、well, after focusing on work for about two or three hours, I go to the kitchen and make tea,
and I take the tea out to the garden.
And I sit on the sofa in the garden, drinking tea and just spacing out.
And since there's a dog in this house, I just space out while watching the dog in the garden, listening to the birds,
that's how I'm resting.
And what I really think is just by making this kind of time,
well, a bad day at work somehow turns into a wonderful day, that's how it feels.
How about you all?
Are you making these kinds of little breaks properly?
I'm sure even very busy people can make this kind of time if they try.
But probably because everyone is busy, if you get even 10 or 20 minutes of free time.
I think you'd try to get the next thing done in that time.
How about it, everyone?
Try to remember your usual behavior.
If you have even a little time, what do you do in that time?
For example, if you're busy with housework, like oh, I have 20 minutes, okay I'll do laundry in the meantime, or
fold clothes, or reply to as many emails as possible in this time, there might be people like that.
Well, I understand how you feel.
Well, I think that's a very good use of time and you're not wasting time.
But still, even for 10 or 20 minutes in a day.
なんか自分の好きな飲み物飲んで、もう仕事や家事のことをdrinking your favorite drink, and forgetting about work and housework for once
and taking a break, isn't that really important?
I wonder.
Why this kind of rest is important is because it gives youメリハリ, balance, I think.
Merihari, this is a really great word so please remember it.
Merihari means
rest when you rest, work when you work, making this distinction clearly.
Having this distinction clearly is called having merihari.
And what's good about having merihari is,
Well, as you all know, when it's time to rest, I can rest properly.
Well, my body, mind, and head all rest properly and recover.
That's true, but if,
ちょっと10分20分休めるのにeven though you could rest for 10 or 20 minutes,
次の仕事をしてたりね他のこと考えてたりするとyou're doing the next work or thinking about other things,
there's noメリハリ, there's no time to rest, right?
And if that kind of life
もし何日も何日も続いていくとcontinues for days and days,
I think you'll really get tired, your body too,
and I think your mind and head will get more and more tired too.
I'm really that type of person,
like I'm always thinking about work, thinking I have to do this, I have to do that.
In my case, my head blows out in a day or two.
By head blowing out, I mean like a tire getting a puncture.
The air leaking out of the tire.
So the air goes out of my head, meaning my head just stops working, I can't do anything, that kind of state.
My head blows out.
So, well, before, I also used to work eight hours a day without resting,
仕事したいと思ってwanting to work,
仕事してた時もあったのねとかthere was a time when I worked like that, or
夜も夜の八時九時まで編集をしたりとかそういう生活は結構長かったんだけどworking on editing until eight or nine at night, that kind of life went on for quite a long time, but
when I kept living like that.
Somehow every day wasn't very fun.
Do you know what I mean, do you all understand?
And really, in probably the last year or so, I've started making rest time for myself,
一日の中にこう20分ぐらいねあのコーヒーを飲んだりして休む時間を何回か作るようになって、making time several times a day to rest for about 20 minutes, drinking coffee and such,
and I stopped thinking things like I don't want to work today.
I think it's probably because I stopped pushing myself too hard.
So, do you understand what I want to say?
So if you're all busy every day and
in a state where you can't even make short breaks.
Please, try hard from now on to make some break time.
Yes, please.
It's strange for me to be asking you, though.
But I understand the reason why you can't make break time.
After all, everyone is busy so you want to use time efficiently, right?
I was originally that type too, with a strong desire to use time well.
So for example,
ちょっと違うかもしれないけど、it might be a bit different, but,
when you put water in the kettle, you have to wait about 15 seconds while filling it, right?
That 15 seconds feels like a waste.
So in the meantime I wash dishes or put dishes away in the cupboard.
And in the end the water overflows from the kettle, well that happens almost every day, yes.
Actually yesterday I baked gratin at home.
And I failed.
Do you know what gratin is?
Um, white sauce
with vegetables or meat or macaroni in it, topped with cheese and baked in the oven.
It's a dish we make quite often in Japan, and when baking that gratin in the oven, since you bake it with cheese on top,
I didn't know how long it would take for the cheese to burn.
I thought I didn't want to just wait in front of the oven watching the cheese.
Well, I put the gratin in the oven, and, well, that was a mistake.
I set the oven temperature to 250 degrees, because I wanted to bake it quickly.
And I went to take a shower.
で、And,
シャワーからまあ10分後ぐらいに戻ってきたら、about 10 minutes later when I came back from the shower,
もうね、グラタンの上のチーズがもう全部真っ黒に焦げて、なんかほぼ燃えてるみたいな感じ、the cheese on top of the gratin was already all burnt black, almost like it was burning,
that's the mistake I made.
Yeah, the cheese was super bitter and tasted bad, so I threw away the top cheese and ate it.
Right, well, like that, I'm originally the type who doesn't want to waste time, so,
結構休むことにquite a bit about taking breaks
I felt guilty.
Guilt, this is also a word we often use in daily conversation, but
guilt means feeling like you've done something bad.
It's like feeling that resting is a bad thing.
Don't you all ever feel like that?
Probably, I
中学生とか高校生ぐらいに学校の勉強がすごく忙しくなってきたときに、when I was in middle school or high school and schoolwork got really busy,
もう学校のね10分とかの休み時間もeven the 10-minute breaks at school
授業の復習とかにfor reviewing lessons and such
I thought I should use them and did so, so probably that habit still remains a bit now,
whenever I have a little break I feel I have to use it well.
I end up thinking that way.
And probably, well, in Japan
not trying hard, or there's an idea that resting equals being lazy.
For example, this is something my grandmother once told me,
about 6 years ago I told my grandma I'm going to Australia for summer vacation.
And then my grandma said, okay.
But I won't tell the relatives, you know, she
私に言ってきて、えなんでって思ったんだけど、理由はsaid to me, and I thought, huh, why, but the reason is
オーストラリアに3週間遊びに行くっていうことがgoing to Australia for 3 weeks to have fun
まあ、つまり仕事や勉強を頑張ってない、遊んでる、well, in other words, not working hard at work or study, just playing around,
so it's kind of bad, that's how my grandma thinks.
And indeed, well, in Japan like this,
the idea that resting equals bad, and working hard for a long time equals good still remains.
When my husband worked at a Japanese school, he really said that in the staff room, ah, the office where the teachers are,
there were several teachers taking naps.
Surprising.
But they work overtime even though they take naps.
If that's the case, just don't nap and do the work during that time and go home early, I think, but.
Everyone does overtime, so doing overtime is seen as working hard.
Well, it was that kind of school, but
resting, when you think about it, isn't a bad thing, and on the contrary it's a really good thing, right?
Because no one can keep working hard without resting,
you have to rest properly and recover your mind, body, and heart.
So I think resting
なんか恥ずかしいことでもないし、上手に休めばis nothing to be ashamed of, and if you rest well
もっとなんか仕事の日もeven on work days
stress will decrease, and you won't think things like oh I hate that work starts Monday anymore.
I think that's a really good thing.
And, also, back in the day, when I was in college, people around me
クラスメートがみんな全然休まないで、こう毎日予定いっぱいだったのを見て、my classmates never took a break, and seeing them with their schedules packed every day,
まあ罪悪感じゃないけど、well, not exactly guilt, but
I felt bad wondering why I couldn't work hard.
My friends around me
would stay up all night writing reports for days without sleep, go out with friends, do club activities, and do research too, like that.
And I wasn't doing anything at all, yet I wanted to rest.
これって。Like, what is this.
どうなのかなみたいな、自分は頑張ってないのかなみたいな、でもっと自分は頑張らなきゃいけないのかなって思って嫌になったことがwondering if I wasn't trying hard enough, thinking I had to try harder, I felt bad about that
でも私今思うのはbut what I think now is
その頑張れる人がすごいんじゃなくて、まあもちろんね頑張れる人はすごいんだけど、無理をして頑張り続けることit's not that people who can push themselves are amazing — well, of course people who can push themselves are amazing, but rather than forcing yourself to keep pushing
よりも上手に休んでresting well and
being someone who can keep going for a long time — that's what being an adult is.
Well, young people do tend to overdo it and try hard, I think it's because they're young that they can do it,
but what's important as an adult is knowing your own limits.
Knowing your own limits.
自分がKnowing that you
ここまでだったら無理なくできるけど、これ以上だったらcan do it without strain up to this point, but beyond that
ちょっと休まないと無理とかね、そういう自分の限界をちゃんと知って、you can't do it without resting a bit, knowing your own limits like that properly,
で、自分の予定を上手にスケジュール、まあ、調整できる人and being someone who can skillfully schedule, well, adjust your plans
is what I think being an adult is.
And I think that now, at twenty-eight, I'm getting closer and closer to this direction of resting well and keeping it sustainable
Yes.
はい。Yes.
How about all of you?
Are you resting well and keeping it sustainable?
I wonder.
はい。Yes.
If you're listening to this episode and thinking, no, I'm not really resting enough — I think there are so many people like that.
So please, after listening to this episode, try to make an effort to create rest time within your day.
Please try making it.
No, it's absolutely okay to rest, so rest with peace of mind, and please try to create a wonderful, balanced
life without overdoing it.
I've also been trying to be mindful of that lately in my life, and yeah, it's really nice, resting.
Yeah, resting is wonderful.
It's good.
And what you want to be careful about when resting is not looking at your phone.
This is pretty hard, but when we're resting we inevitably end up watching short videos, right?
But you know, if you think about it.
When you watch short videos, you're using your brain a lot.
The amount of information in short videos is insanely huge, and even though it's trivial stuff, there's so much information that
頭はyour brain is
working really hard but you don't remember anything — that kind of state.
It's kind of a waste of time, isn't it?
Honestly, I always regret it after watching YouTube videos for like 20 minutes,
I think it's quite a waste of time.
And also, what I hate is
せっかく休むって決めてね美味しいコーヒーを作って休んでるときにwhen you've decided to rest and made delicious coffee to relax,
When I was watching short videos, I don't really remember the taste of the coffee, like I barely remember drinking coffee.
When I watch short videos while eating,
it's like I barely remember eating, doesn't that happen to you?
So when you decide to rest, ideally put your phone
in your work room, or don't keep it in your pocket, that kind of effort is important.
I'm really embarrassed to admit this, but,
なんかソファに座ってlike, sitting on the sofa
ふうって、今から休もうってsigh, now I'm going to rest
思った瞬間に、もう何にも考えてないのに、the moment I think that, without thinking about anything at all,
without thinking about anything, my hand goes into my pocket, takes out my phone, and unlocks it.
Seriously unconsciously, without thinking about anything at all.
I thought, wow, that's scary.
そう。Yeah.
So when you rest, just leave your phone in another room and surprisingly it feels refreshing.
I did that today too, I left my phone in another room
自分はコーヒーを飲んで休んでたんだけど、and I was drinking coffee and resting,
and somehow, it felt different from when the phone is in my pocket.
It's somehow different.
So please, everyone try doing that too.
はい。Yes.
Well, so we're almost at the end of the episode, so I'd like to ask about your favorite ways to rest.
How do you like to rest?
Do you like drinking coffee?
Or do you like drinking tea?
I've decided to limit myself to one cup of coffee a day.
And after drinking coffee, I usually drink tea.
I really love coffee, but
my body can't handle a second cup of coffee.
I think it's probably the caffeine in coffee, I can really enjoy the first cup, but any more than that, somehow,
I get heartburn.
Heartburn is
like when you eat too much greasy food and your body feels like, I don't want to eat anymore, I don't want to drink anymore, you feel sick.
That's what heartburn is, and somehow, when I drink a second cup of coffee I usually get heartburn, so
coffee is limited to one cup a day.
And after that I make tea.
で、And,
I really love herbal tea, but
でも今私が住んでる家はあのまあ夫と夫の両親みんなin the house I live in now, my husband and his parents, everyone
ヨークシャー出身のイギリス人なので、is British from Yorkshire, so
Yorkshire Tea
well, it's a fairly dark black tea, you just make tea normally and add milk to it and drink it.
Honestly, I was surprised when I first heard about this.
Like, milk in tea, milk in tea
I was a bit surprised, but now I've...
I've gotten really used to it too, and I really love drinking Yorkshire Tea with milk.
It's somehow calming, yeah, it calms me down.
はい。Yes.
And when I rest, I like to go outside the building and feel the sunlight.
Sunlight really gives you energy, doesn't it.
On cloudy or rainy days, well, it can't be helped, but
on sunny days, whether it's a bit hot or a bit cold, I try to step outside the building and feel the sun.
Doing that clears my head and my body somehow feels energized, like my energy is being recharged.
Well, if you can, it would be nice to go for a light walk during your break.
But well, I think this kind of thing really depends on what kind of place everyone works in,
I think it's hard for people who work at a company, in an office, to make that kind of time.
My husband, um, came to Australia and works as a prison officer,
いやマジで休み時間なんてお昼休みしかないみたいだから、and seriously, it seems like he only has lunch break as a break,
でもね私の夫はお昼休みの時間はだいたいあの駐車場に行って自分の車に座ってbut my husband usually goes to the parking lot during his lunch break and sits in his car
駐車場にはあの木がたくさんあって、there are lots of trees in the parking lot,
and he said it's a really nice break time because the breeze feels great and it's a spot with lots of sun.
Yes, so, well, within what you can do yourself
try to be creative and make time to properly rest.
Yes, so I'd like to end today's episode here.
