Hello everyone. I'm Chan
in Japanese.
Since I started working in Japan,
I'd like to talk about something that has changed a bit in my way of thinking.
It's about what it means to do your best, or to work hard.
When you hear the word "ganbaru" — to do your best — what do you imagine?
Working with all your might,
難しいことがあってもやめないこと、それともnot giving up even when things are difficult, or
どんなに大変でも最後までやり続けることでしょうか?continuing until the end no matter how tough it gets?
The old me thought that doing your best simply meant trying desperately with all your might.
Even when I'm tired, I keep pushing myself.
Even if there's something I don't understand, I figure it out on my own, and try not to bother others as much as possible
That was the image I had.
But in Japan,
since I started working as a company employee, my way of thinking has gradually changed.
I now work at a Japanese company, and this is my second year as a working adult.
Especially since I'm a foreigner,
I wondered if I could
仕事ができるのかなとか日本語でちゃんとwork like Japanese people, or if I could communicate properly in Japanese, and I was worried about many things.
So when I had just joined the company,
I just wanted to learn the job as quickly as possible.
I didn't want to cause trouble for the people around me, and I wanted to be able to do everything by myself as much as possible,
But you know, when I actually started working, there really are so many things I don't understand.
What I studied at university and actual work are indeed different.
For example,
例えばeven with just how to write an email, I wondered if this expression might be rude,
メールの書き方の一つでも、この表現で失礼じゃないかな、or who I should check with in a situation like this.
At first, even work that looked easy,
sometimes took much more time than I expected.
And even when there was something I didn't understand, I wondered if it was okay to ask about something like this.
Everyone looks busy, and I didn't want to get in the way, so there were times when I couldn't ask questions.
But one day I suddenly thought,
Is worrying alone without understanding really working hard?
Of course, thinking for yourself is important.
But there are times when you keep thinking alone and still can't find an answer, right?
At times like that, when I took the plunge and asked a senior colleague, they'd say, oh, you can just do it like this, and
Something I had been struggling with for about 30 minutes on my own could be solved in 5 minutes just by asking.
At that time I thought, oh, I should have asked sooner.
From that time on, I started to think that asking others is also
その時から自分は人に聞くこともsomething necessary in order to work hard at my job.
Being able to do everything alone is not necessarily a good thing.
Well, work isn't something you do alone, so consulting and cooperating with the people around you,
まあ仕事って一人でするものじゃないんですから、周りの人と相談したり協力したり、and sometimes getting help from them, moving forward together like that is also important, I think.
And another thing that changed my thinking is that working hard and
overdoing it are different things.
In Japan, you often hear phrases like "Good luck" or "Let's do our best," right?
I love these words too.
Placeholder translation for key 49.
It's true that when someone says "Do your best," it makes me feel like they're cheering me on.
でもBut
昔の自分はmy old self
when I heard the word "do your best," I often thought I had to do more, I still had to try harder.
For example, when work is busy and there's a lot to do.
You want to finish everything quickly, right?
But if you rush your work, you can反而 make mistakes.
And then it takes more time to fix those mistakes.
In the end, it would have been faster to stay calm from the start.
So lately, when I'm busy, I try to calm down first and think about what is most important right now,
which job I should start with.
But.
Not just working hard, but thinking about how
I can do things more efficiently, I feel that kind of thinking is
also important at work.
And this is something I feel especially since becoming a working adult, but resting
is actually really important too.
When I was a student, I thought even if I was tired, I could just push myself a little and study.
But since I started working, I've come to think that managing my physical condition and concentration
is also my own responsibility.
For example, when you're tired.
Even things you can usually do easily sometimes just don't progress, right?
Staring at the computer screen but nothing sinks in at all.
Huh?
There are times when I think, "What was I just doing?"
At times like that, taking a short break
or drinking coffee or getting some fresh air outside, even just 10 minutes can change your mood.
I've always liked going to cafes, so
on my days off I sometimes spend time relaxing at a cafe or go somewhere with nature.
I think it's because I have that kind of time that I can do my best again from the next day.
I used to think, if there's time to rest,
shouldn't I be doing something more?
But now I think that resting properly is also necessary in order to keep doing your best for a long time.
And lastly, one more thing
日本で働くようになってからsince I started working in Japan,
what I've realized is that the results of hard work don't always show right away.
When I was a student, if I studied hard,
there were relatively clear results, like test scores going up or passing exams.
But with work, that's often not the case, right?
Even though I prepared so hard, things didn't go as expected, or I feel like I'm trying hard but still
can't see results, at times like that.
I do feel a little down.
But when I compare myself in my first year to myself now, I've thought, oh, things I couldn't do before
I can now do normally.
For example, work that took a really long time at first
今ではnow
I can do faster than before,
以前は先輩に確認していたことをor things I used to check with my senior
I can now decide on my own, they may be really small things.
But when I notice that kind of small growth.
It makes me a little happy. Like, oh,
I guess I am growing a little too.
So lately, rather than comparing myself to others, I want to value comparing myself to yesterday's me or last year's me.
That's what I want to cherish.
Of course, there are many people around me who are good at their jobs.
When I see such people, I think they're amazing.
I think I want to become like that too.
But that doesn't mean I can do the same right away.
People have different experiences, and different strengths.
So I think it's fine to grow little by little without rushing.
When I think about it this way, for me,
I feel like the meaning of the word "trying hard" has changed a bit.
I used to think trying hard equals just doing everything with all my might.
But now, trying hard equals
thinking and learning in my own way and moving forward little by little, I guess.
It's okay to ask others when I don't understand, it's okay to rest a little when I'm tired,
and when I fail, I can just learn from it.
And if I can do even a little more than yesterday, that's also a fine growth, right?
I'm still only in my second year as a working adult, and I think there will be harder things ahead,
and my way of thinking may change too.
でも。But,
Right now, rather than just pushing myself too hard to do my best, I want to be someone who can keep doing their best for a long time in my own way.
I want to become someone who can keep trying hard for a long time in my own way.
How about you all?
What does "trying hard" mean to you all?
And has your way of thinking about work changed since you started working in Japan?
