It's great that phones can fold.
Hello, this is Tobalog, with 6 years of using foldable phones.
Have you all pre-ordered the iPhone Duo?
Yes, this pre-order was quite a battle to get one.
As a gadget reviewer, I thought I should have one,
I love the Galaxy Z Fold8, but I wanted to have one, so I tried to pre-order, but I was way too naive.
It's arriving in December, so it won't arrive for a while, but that's how much attention people are paying to it.
Especially as the first foldable on iOS, people who avoided it because it was Android will probably
折りたたみスマホを使うようになると思うので、今回はせっかくだからトバログ的に、折りたたみスマホって何がいいの?start using foldable phones, so this time, from Tobalog's perspective, what's so good about foldable phones?
And how do I actually use it in the first place?
Or what drawbacks have I felt so far?
I'd like to chat a bit about those things.
So let's get right into it.
So, I want to talk about the appeal of foldable phones, foldables,
いきたいんですけども、まずやっぱりこれが最高!but first, this is the best part!
The reason I can't let go of it is this.
It's that it fits casually in your pocket at this size.
When you open it like this,
普通に、いい感じのサイズのタブレットなのに、it's normally a nice-sized tablet, yet
折り曲げていつでもどこでも、電車に乗る時でもベッドサイドでもポケットに入れて持ち運べるっていう、you can fold it up and carry it in your pocket anytime, anywhere, whether you're getting on a train or by your bedside,
that's really the biggest reason to choose a foldable phone.
For example, speaking of tablets, I have an iPad here, but with an iPad you can't just put it in your pocket like this.
So when you're going to bring this, you
やってカバンを用意したりとか、あとはどういうバックパックに入れようかな、have to prepare a bag, or think about which backpack to put it in,
そもそも今日の用事ってこういうタブレット使うかなみたいな、そういうふうに持ち歩くかどうかから考えて使うと思うand even think from the start about whether you'll use a tablet like this for today's plans,
んですが、折りたたみbut in the case of a foldable
phone, since this itself is a phone, there's basically no option of not bringing it.
It already has Suica and mobile wallet in it,
and phone calls, LINE, everything is built into here, so you don't even think about whether to bring it or not, it's just like you bring your phone and keys anyway, that's the kind of thing it is.
When you're casually carrying it around like this, and then the moment you open it, it becomes a tablet, that's
the biggest appeal of this phone.
Is that all?
Isn't a regular phone fine?
You might think that, but once you actually use it you'll understand, it really changes how you use your time.
How I, Tobalog, usually use it most is, first of all, e-books.
Reading manga or magazines, for reading books like that a bigger screen is more comfortable, so I basically read on this.
Like this, you can carry around all kinds of books, like carrying a bookshelf in your pocket, so I think that's the best,
んですけど、例えば僕は雑誌がすごい好きなので、but for example, I really love magazines, so
when reading a magazine, if you hold it vertically, you can open it at this size.
I'll blur the contents a bit, but even when you open it like this and read, it's quite easy to see.
It might be hard to tell through the blur, but magazines tend to have rather small text, so on a regular phone you can barely read them without zooming in.
But at this size, a two-page spread is still a bit hard to read, but
if you hold it vertically, you can see it pretty clearly without zooming in or out.
That's really great.
For example, I have a phone with a Pro Max-class screen here, and on a regular phone it looks like this when opened.
With a foldable phone that has this 4:3 screen in particular, there's this much difference in size, so it's incredibly easy to see.
There's this much difference for text pages too, and for spreads it's obviously different.
When I was using a regular vertical-sized phone before, I never wanted to read magazines on my phone, but with a foldable,
when I want to look at a magazine, I can just tap and open it right away, that's just the best.
That's just the best.
Of course, manga is also incredibly easy to read.
You can read it on a smartphone too, but this screen size is just the best.
It's especially noticeable when spread open, in terms of size area,
it's really more than double, this sense of size.
This is really great when reading manga, spreads and those full-page illustrations have such immersion, that's fun.
By the way, text-based books look like this.
With text books there's not that much benefit, but this size when folded feels like carrying around a really small e-book reader
and that feels really nice.
What I often use it for is looking at Instagram feeds like this, thinking oh I like this presentation, and this too
グイッと大きく開くとこの感じでif you open it wide like this, in this way
I really like that you can enjoy the feed even more on this large screen.
PinterestLike, wow this is nice, the immersion is totally different. Pinterest
is like this too.
Also, for example, as basic as it sounds, web browsing and such,
there are so many sites these days that are comfortable to read like this in PC site view, keeping the PC site layout, so I find that really useful.
When vertical, it's almost like a smallish PC, that comfort like using those old Windows tablets. Toblog
can also be read like this.
Though when vertical, it switches to mobile view,
これもトバログなんとかしろよって感じなんですが、まあ時々こういうウェブサイト表示がPCサイトにならないような変なサイトもまだまだwhich makes me want to say, come on Toblog, fix this, but well, there are still quite a few weird sites like this that won't show the PC version,
多いんですが、この辺は徐々に良くなっていくんじゃないかなっていうところで、まあウェブサイトこうやって大型で見るっていうのもそうなんですけど、どっちかっていうとやっぱりbut I think this will gradually get better, and well, viewing websites large like this is one thing, but rather
when I'm on the move, I think I more often use the screen split in two like this.
For example, when I'm traveling by train a lot,
動画の構成案考えたり先方のメールとのチェックとかいろいろit's time for thinking, like coming up with video outlines or checking emails from clients and such
考え事をand doing various thinking,
for example, while looking at the official site or opening documents over here, I take notes in Notion like, oh this is good, like this.
3Also for split screen, on iPhone I think you can only do up to 2 screens, but on this Galaxy Z Fold8 you can do 3 screens. When opening 3
画面開く時は縦で使うことの方が多いんですが、screens, I more often use it vertically,
the text may look quite small, but surprisingly this is comfortable even in the train.
Keeping this side
なんかメインの作業用にしておいて、これでカタカタ打ちながらちょっとClaudeとかで聞きたいことあったらClaudeの画面を大きめに開いて、ここas the main workspace, typing away like this, and if I want to ask Claude something, I open Claude's screen larger, and here
で聞きたいことを会話して返事を待っている間になんかウェブサイトとか資料とかを見ながら、こっちで例えばトバログwhile chatting about what I want to ask and waiting for a reply, I look at websites or documents, and over here for example I open Toblog
みたいなのを開いてここでコピー&ペーストをしたりしながら、or something like that and do copy & paste, while
こっちでメモを取るとか、画面のサイズ的にはそこまで大きくないんですけど、意外とこのtaking notes over here, the screen size itself isn't that big, but surprisingly once you get used to this
way of using it, it's quite comfortable, and I usually think up video outlines with this.
SIGMAAlso, with this screen aspect ratio, it's really easy to check presentation slides like this, and this is what I talked about at the SIGMA
こんな風に例えば新製品like for example, for a new product
のまだ発売前の資料とかを読み込まなきゃいけない時とか、けっこうガジェットとかだとあって、when I have to read through pre-release materials, which happens quite a lot with gadgets,
それを読み込みながら送られてきた資料を見ながら動画の構成案を作ったり、こっち側while reading that and looking at the sent materials I make a video outline, and this side
I keep as an email reply draft,
この資料のここlike, I'm curious about this part of the materials, and using it PC-like across several tools like this, I think
I end up using it a lot in those kinds of situations.
Also, since the screen itself is quite large,
こうやってwith a keyboard
I've tried building a work setup when I want to work at a cafe or something, and my impression is that input and output are surprisingly comfortable thanks to it being foldable, which is a big deal for me.
In my case I don't really watch videos or play games much,
僕の場合逆にあんまり動画を見たりとかゲームをやったりはしないんですけど、well, I'm not sure if games are easy to control, but for videos it's like watching a bit PC-style like this
By the way, text-based books look like this.
Being able to do that is actually a pretty nice point.
Like this, a fairly large screen is comfortable.
But in the case of the Galaxy Z Fold8, the speaker is here on this side.
So when watching videos, since it's not left-right symmetrical, I sometimes watch like this, or open it like this and stand it up.
Well, it's like you can watch videos that way.
In my case, I often use it for doing this work on multiple screens, or reading magazines.
This is the best, it really completely changes how I spend time on the train.
It makes me think people really change depending on their environment,
like how I use my time, I've been able to read magazines and books I wanted to read but couldn't, so this is good.
Yes, so as it's a physical product, foldable phones do have quite a few proper drawbacks.
I'd be happy if you buy one knowing those, so I'll talk about that properly too.
First, the price.
When it comes to price, it's definitely expensive.
The price range is really over 250,000 yen, and lately around 300,000 yen is average.
Especially for the iPhone Duo, the cheapest is 360,000 yen.
Basically, due to this kind of structure, it can't be helped, but it has two displays built in.
さらにFurthermore,
こういう構造、普通のスマホにはないヒンジの構造だったり、this kind of structure, the hinge structure that regular phones don't have,
あとはカメラをこっちとこっちand also putting cameras here and here,
にもつけるとか、そういう細かい色々な技術が積み重なってこういう折りたたみスマホってできているので、正直価格foldable phones are made from the accumulation of various detailed technologies like that, so honestly in terms of price alone,
even if you buy a smartphone and a tablet separately.
it fits into the price of this one device, so the price is quite a drawback.
Price aside, second, they break easily.
Having used them for about 6 years, the natural failure rate of foldable phones is clearly higher.
With this hinge part that folds, just having this kind of mechanism makes it prone to breaking,
for example, if you drop it like this and break it.
まだthat's still
I've actually tried several manufacturers, and there were times when this side screen just stopped working on its own without doing anything,
that happened a few times.
I've had about 3 such natural failures, and not only is the price high to begin with, but having it repaired if it breaks is also quite expensive.
When I had a vertical-fold phone repaired before, I think it was about 50,000 yen.
When I got a quote for a horizontal-fold phone, I think it was about 90,000 yen, so it really costs about one-third to half of the purchase price.
So if you're buying a foldable phone, you should consider joining insurance as mandatory.
It's like optional car insurance for cars.
If you have it, even if it breaks they'll replace it with a new one or repair it, and each company offers such insurance, so.
I think it's best to pretty much join it.
Z Fold8By the way, the Z Fold8 I'm using
iPhone Duowas about 1,300 yen per month, I think. For the iPhone Duo,
there's AppleCare+, which is about 3,000 yen per month.
That's 30,000 yen per year, so if you join the insurance for 2 years it becomes 60,000 yen, which starts to feel like car insurance pricing.
Conversely, that shows how high the failure rate and parts prices are.
There are still more drawbacks, and there are also some apps that aren't supported.
For example, I talked about Pinterest earlier, but Pinterest doesn't support this kind of vertical screen, and for some reason it's fixed to this horizontal screen.
That's a bit inconvenient in a subtle way, and basically with unsupported apps, they display like a tall regular smartphone.
あとは縦にしてもこういう表示になるとか、even in vertical it displays like this, or
一応スマホメーカー側の設定でこういうふうにon the smartphone manufacturer's settings side, you can choose like this
applications, but even if you press that, there are quite a few apps that still aren't supported, so I can't deny it still feels transitional here.
In terms of actually using it, it's not that inconvenient, but I feel like that kind of downside or risk does exist.
Still, Apple has released the iPhone Duo, and they've also set solid design guidelines for iPhone, so.
The trend of the times has been that Android
先に技術をadds the technology first, and then when it becomes popular, Apple
追加して、それで人気が出たらAppleがcopies it and packages the design and UI/UX really well, and then Android copies that UI/UX.
There's a history of them continuously improving through synergy,
どんどん相乗効果でsteadily getting more polished through synergy,
歴史があるので、with that history,
Considering that, thanks to the release of the iPhone Duo, I think web display and app optimization will keep progressing from here.
So to wrap things up, my conclusion is that foldable phones are seriously great.
They're really amazing.
Once you have this, you really can't go back to a regular phone.
That said,
I also love gadgets, so I still use slab-type smartphones too, but while the price is high, in terms of satisfaction,
やっぱりすごくいいところなのでぜひこれから気になる人もor if you've already pre-ordered the iPhone Duo or are still on the fence, I hope this video helps you.
