Hello everyone.
Welcome to the Japanese podcast.
Today, let's take a slow look at writing with AI.
はい。Yes.
Recently there are a lot of AI-written texts on the internet.
That's right.
But to be honest, I didn't really like AI writing.
Oh, really.
Why is that.
The grammar is very correct.
But it somehow sounds like a robot talking.
I see.
I often feel it's not interesting at all to read.
It certainly feels cold, doesn't it.
It's writing without warm human emotion.
Yes, exactly like that.
Actually, Mai, the person I'm introducing today, thought the same way as everyone at first.
Mai didn't like AI either?
はい。Yes.
Mai doubted that if she left it to AI, she would lose her own ability to write.
And she also felt it seemed difficult to use.
I understand that feeling very well.
I also think it seems difficult.
But Mai has a friend named Yuto.
This person is completely different.
What do you mean by different?
Yuto has recently become really into having AI write for him.
And he's writing very interesting pieces that everyone wants to read.
What, he's writing interesting pieces using AI?
That's interesting.
Yes, Yuto's way of using AI is completely different from the way we know well.
A completely different way.
I wonder what secret there is.
The biggest secret is not using your head on the day you write.
え?Huh?
He doesn't use his head when writing?
That's right.
That's strange.
Normally when writing, you think a lot about what to write first or what words to use.
Well, normally that's true, right.
But Yuto doesn't think from scratch after sitting in front of the computer.
Then what does he do?
He prepares thoroughly in advance so he doesn't get tired on the day of writing.
Yuto calls this preparation.
Preparation?
In other words, it's the same as cutting vegetables and meat before cooking.
Exactly right.
That's a wonderful analogy.
Thank you.
On weekends you cut carrots and onions and keep them in the fridge, right.
And on the day itself, you get everything to the point where you just have to stir-fry it in the pan.
I see, so that frying pan is the AI.
Yes, that's what I mean.
But what specifically are the vegetables and meat of the writing?
What should we prepare in advance?
One of the most important ingredients is deciding on a persona.
Persona, what is a persona?
It's the model of the reader, who you are writing for.
A model of the reader.
For example, like a student studying Japanese, is that what you mean?
はい。Yes.
Also, things like a busy office worker working overtime every day, or a housewife who's a beginner at cooking, we define them in detail.
I see.
But why is deciding that so important?
If you don't decide this and just ask the AI to write about side jobs, what do you think will happen?
Yeah, it seems like it would become a very difficult and stiff piece of writing.
That's right.
Like a textbook sentence such as, side jobs have a good effect on the economy.
Exactly.
AI knows a lot of difficult words from all over the world.
So without a persona, it ends up choosing the safest and stiffest words.
Ah, that's why it sounds like a robot and is boring.
That's right.
But for example, you give it an instruction to write for an office worker who is busy and tired every day.
はい。Yes.
Then the AI stops using difficult words.
Oh, it stops?
はい。Yes.
Thank you for your hard work at your job every day.
Why don't you try starting a side job in a little time on the weekend?
It will choose kind words like that.
That's completely different.
The AI changes its words to suit the reader.
That's right.
It suddenly becomes a human-like, warm piece of writing, doesn't it?
はい。Yes.
This makes me want to read it.
But doesn't it take a bit of time to think up this persona in detail by yourself?
That's true, isn't it.
So Yuto-san even makes the AI do the work of creating the persona.
え?Huh?
You make the AI think about the readers?
はい。Yes.
I'm going to write an article about side jobs from now on.
You ask it, please suggest three personas of what kind of people would want to read this article.
I see.
You use the power of AI to do the preparation.
That sounds much faster than thinking about it all alone.
Yes.
There are other important ingredients to prepare.
What is it?
It's a keyword that becomes the theme of the article.
A keyword, right.
はい。Yes.
Yuto-san prepares about 50 of these keywords in advance and makes them into a list.
Isn't that way too many?
You'd think so, right?
はい。Yes.
Thinking up 50 words facing a computer all day on a day off is really tough.
Mitsu-san was also surprised, thinking it was too many.
But don't worry.
Yuto-san has AI come up with these 50 keywords too.
Ah, so that's how it is.
He doesn't think of them himself.
はい。Yes.
For example, he has it generate 50 sets of three-word phrases like side-job notebook failure stories all at once.
That's convenient.
And then he saves them in a Google spreadsheet.
With that, the preparation of materials is perfect.
In cooking terms, it's like having all your vegetables pre-cut and lined up in boxes.
That's exactly the state.
Certainly, once you do this, the rest really seems easy.
So, after all the materials are ready, what do you think he does on the day he writes?
Um, he picks one from the list, like I'll use this keyword today, right?
はい。Yes.
And then I think he gives the AI a long instruction like, please write for this persona with this keyword.
Normally you'd think so, right?
But actually, Yuto-san prepares the wording of the instructions to give to the AI.
He prepares the instructions too?
はい。Yes.
The wording of instructions to AI is called a prompt, and Yuto-san has the AI itself create this prompt.
Wait a minute.
The AI creates the words to instruct the AI?
That's right.
That's a bit confusing.
It sounds like AI is controlling AI.
It does sound like that, right?
But the method is not difficult.
How does he do it?
Yuto-san hands over the keyword he'll use today and asks the first AI to make the prompt that will produce the best article.
I see.
And then he uses the resulting prompt to actually have it write the text.
It's AI for everything.
But does that really produce a perfect text from the start?
No, at first it was apparently a bit off.
Ah, I thought so.
But here's where it gets interesting.
Yuto-san looks at the text the AI wrote and asks for further adjustments.
What do you mean by adjustments?
For example, you tell it it's a little too polished, so to add more of a human touch.
You tell the AI to add a human touch.
Yes, there's an even more interesting method.
Please tell me.
You have the AI read a little of your favorite writer's or blogger's writing.
And then you have it imitate them, telling it to write in a vibe like this person.
Yeah, have it imitate a writer you like.
You have it do that?
はい。Yes.
Is that really okay?
Doesn't that become like making a copy of someone, like plagiarism?
I completely understand that feeling.
I feel a bit uncomfortable about it.
Mai was worried about exactly the same thing, whether it would be plagiarism.
Right, isn't it?
Even if the idea is your own, if the rhythm of the writing and the word choices belong to someone else, it doesn't feel like you can call it your own work.
This is how Yuto thinks about it.
You're only borrowing the clothes, the person inside is still you.
What do you mean by borrowing clothes?
In other words, writing style and rhythm are like fashion.
Fashion?
はい。Yes.
Even if you borrow a friend's nice suit, the person talking inside it is still you, right?
Ah, I see.
You make sure to put into the article your own real failures you've experienced and the joy you've felt.
If you do that, it becomes a completely original work, that's the idea.
I see.
So you're not copying the inner experience as well.
Exactly.
Borrow only the clothes, and convey your own heart.
Still, it makes me a little nervous, but it's interesting that there's that way of thinking.
Yes, indeed.
So, hearing everything so far, how do you feel?
The AI thinks up the persona, makes the prompt, and writes the text too, right?
Then it feels like humans don't have to do anything.
If the AI does everything, humans just wait while drinking tea, right?
Yes, that's very easy.
But that's not the case.
It's not?
The most important job that absolutely must be done by a human remains at the end.
Oh, what is it?
It's reading, checking, and fixing what the AI wrote.
Fixing it?
はい。Yes.
Yuto strongly says you should definitely do the final editing yourself.
After having the AI write everything, a human fixes it again?
The AI's writing should have perfect grammar, right?
The grammar is perfect.
But actually, AI sometimes lies.
Lies?
Does AI lie on purpose?
Not on purpose.
AI is bad at saying it doesn't know.
So it can't say it doesn't know.
はい。Yes.
So when asked something it doesn't know, it randomly pieces together the knowledge it does know.
And it sometimes writes wrong things with great confidence.
That is very scary.
It lies with a straight face as if it were true.
はい。Yes.
What happens if you post false information made up by AI directly on the internet as is?
It would cause a lot of trouble for the people who read it.
They might believe the wrong information.
Exactly.
That's why you have to do the final check yourself.
So a human reads it and checks if the facts are correct and if there's anything strange.
はい。Yes.
This is human responsibility.
I understand well.
But if you read AI's text, check for lies, and fix it yourself, doesn't it take time?
You would think so, right?
Yes, I think it would take about an hour, the same as writing it yourself from scratch.
But it seems it only takes about 20 minutes in total.
Only 20 minutes?
Yes, it takes AI about 5 minutes to write the text.
And then it takes about 10 minutes for a human to check that text and revise it by adding their own experience and opinions.
5 minutes plus 10 minutes is 15 minutes.
Finally, it takes 5 minutes to create a cover image for the article using ChatGPT's image generation feature.
That's all.
20 minutes in total.
That's really like magic.
It's fast, isn't it?
If you think from zero, write the text, correct mistakes, and even find an illustration yourself, it normally takes about 3 hours.
That's right.
It saves a lot of time.
But there is something you must not forget.
What is it?
Without the human's 10 minutes in the middle, the article cannot be completed.
It means it won't be finished.
I understand well that no matter how convenient it is, you must not trust AI 100%.
The human's 10 minutes is the most important.
はい。Yes.
If you use AI well like this, it is very convenient.
But there are people in the world who are against using AI.
Ah, when I look at the internet, I often see people angry about texts made with AI.
That's right.
Mai says she has also seen opinions online saying don't write with AI.
Those are strong words.
Yuto says he has actually seen angry words saying don't dirty the notebook.
Don't dirty the notebook?
Note is a website for writing articles, right?
はい。Yes.
Maybe there's a feeling that only things written with heart by people belong there.
Yes.
There are many people who dislike AI-written empty text increasing massively on the internet.
What do you think about such strict opinions, Yuto?
Yuto thinks of AI as something like a kitchen knife.
That knife used for cooking?
はい。Yes.
If used correctly, a knife can cut vegetables beautifully and make delicious dishes.
That's right.
But if you use it the wrong way, it can become a dangerous thing that hurts people.
I see, so AI itself is not something good or bad.
Oh, you mean it depends on the person who uses it?
Exactly.
Just having AI write text and putting it on the internet without even checking it is like serving uncut raw vegetables to customers as they are.
That would not be tasty and would be very rude.
That's right.
That's why that 10-minute check from earlier is necessary.
I see, you properly add your own thoughts and things you really experienced to the draft AI wrote.
When a human cooks it that way, it becomes a delicious piece of writing for the first time.
That's right.
Yuto describes AI as a convenient partner that writes drafts for him.
Partner, meaning a partner you work together with.
はい。Yes.
AI is not a magic machine, but a partner to create good things together.
Those are very nice words.
Mai also heard these words and was impressed, saying partner, that's a nice expression.
I think it's a wonderful way of thinking.
Because we think of AI as just a robot, it feels cold and boring.
That's right.
But if you think of it as a partner that helps you give shape to your ideas, it sounds very interesting.
Yuto is really into this writing with AI as a partner, and he says he will continue doing it.
Is he going to level up even more from now on?
はい。Yes.
Next, he says he wants to research what words are searched a lot on the internet and write articles that will be read by more people.
He says he wants to see.
Researching search volume, he's already like a professional writer.
That's amazing passion.
Yes, but that topic is a bit difficult, so he decided to teach Mai about it slowly another time.
Mai was very skeptical at first, wasn't she?
But did her way of thinking change after listening to Yuto?
はい。Yes.
In the end, she became very interested, saying, show me AI actually working next time.
Really?
That's good.
I'm happy that Mai's feelings changed too.
Indeed.
By the way, after talking about such cutting-edge technology, what did the two talk about when they parted?
That's the funny part.
After they finished talking about AI, the two were talking about a newly opened ramen shop in front of the station.
A ramen shop, huh.
I somehow suddenly feel a sense of closeness.
That's very human-like.
Yes.
The conversation ended with the two promising to go to that ramen shop together next Saturday.
They'll surely get excited talking about their new partner again while eating delicious ramen.
That may be true.
AI writing may be cold, but I felt a very warm connection from Yuto-san and Mai-san's conversation.
Yes, that's really true.
What did you all think after hearing today's talk.
If you were to write something tomorrow, would you like to make AI your partner.
Or would you want to write everything by hand from the prep work onward.
That's it for today, let's talk together again next time.
Goodbye.
Goodbye.
