Today's radio theme is what is taken for granted?
です。That's it.
What is taken for granted for you all?
For example, what is normal in daily life,
the rules of the place where you live.
I think there are various things that are taken for granted in them.
But what is normal is completely different depending on the person.
So for example, now, students
はどうやって学校に行きますか?how do you go to school?
For some people, taking the bus may be normal, and for others, walking may be normal.
I think there are also people for whom taking the train is normal.
Also, for example, there are people for whom eating breakfast at home is normal, and
I think there are also people for whom eating out is normal.
Maybe there are also people for whom not eating is normal.
What is truly normal for you
I think there are many things that are not normal for someone else.
Especially, I think lifestyle habits and rules are completely different.
I think Japan has a lot of rules.
This is something often said by people studying Japanese.
But since I am Japanese and have always lived in Japan,
yeah, having many rules is already normal for me.
So I didn't really notice that there are many rules.
Since I started teaching Japanese,
日本語の先生になってから、そのまあ留学生とか私が教えている生徒さんたちにsince I became a Japanese teacher, as I listened to various stories from international students and the students I teach,
I came to think, ah, indeed,
Japan really does have a lot of rules.
But until then,
well, for me having many rules was normal, so I had never really thought about whether it was a lot or a little.
うん。Yeah.
Well, but I think the rules for taking out the trash are a bit too many.
And these trash disposal rules differ by region, so
えっとゴミ出しルール地域によって本当に違うから、まあそれはuh, the trash rules are really different by region, so well, that is
rather than many, I personally think they are complicated.
Complicated.
That's right.
There are also regions where you have to buy trash bags.
Designated trash bags,
このゴミ袋を買って捨ててくださいっていう地域もあれば、there are regions that say please buy and use these trash bags, and
well, there are also regions where the color of the bag is decided but it's up to you, so yeah.
For me now, buying designated trash bags is normal, but in other regions that is not normal
right.
うん。Yeah.
このようにIn this way,
there are many things that are normal for you but not normal for others.
But the things we can do as a matter of course, when we suddenly can't do them anymore.
It's really troubling, isn't it.
Well, it's obvious, but that
I think we tend to take the things we've always been able to do for granted.
That's how I am.
I often end up taking the things I can do in daily life for granted.
So when I can no longer do them,
yeah, I realize how grateful I should be for what I thought was so normal.
Well, I talked about this on Patreon, so I'd like you to listen to the details on the Patreon podcast, but
in the area where I live now, I can't use the trains.
The trains aren't running.
Well, I talked about the reason on Patreon, so please listen to the Patreon podcast.
I won't go into the details here.
But anyway, right now I just can't ride the train.
I've lived a life of riding trains for decades,
and this is the first time in my life that trains have stopped like this.
At first, when they said the trains weren't running,
動かないって言ってもeven if they said they're not running,
I thought it would be just for a day or two, and surely they'd be running again in three days.
For me, riding the train is just normal.
But it's been much longer than I expected.
I still can't ride the train now.
はい。Yes.
Well, I talked about the reason on Patreon, so please listen to it.
No, I never imagined it.
A life of not riding the train, of not being able to ride the train,
I had never imagined that at all in my life.
Riding the train was truly just a normal part of my daily life.
Sometimes there are accidents or incidents and I can't ride the train.
But that's only for a few hours.
At most, a day.
But I haven't ridden for weeks now.
Not being able to ride, I really never imagined this.
No, it's quite tough,
really.
You know, I think there are people who normally live by car.
Living in an area where cars are essential,
there are actually quite a lot of my radio listeners who go to school, commute, and shop by car.
But for me, you know, being able to ride the train every day was just normal, so
things we take for granted can really stop being normal.
Yeah, normally, I...
I think that being able to do this work, or being healthy now, is not something to take for granted.
うん。Yeah.
I think every day that someday I might not be able to work,
or someday I might lose my health, I think about those things every day.
But I really never thought that about trains, so I'm a bit bewildered.
Well, it can't be helped.
This really isn't anyone's fault, it just can't be helped.
うん。Yeah.
責任。Responsibility.
But things related to daily life are really tough, aren't they.
No, I was a little surprised.
うん。Yeah.
Making use of this experience.
Ah, well, I really thought that everything I'm able to do now is not to be taken for granted.
Like I said a little while ago, like
自分の体のこととか仕事とか、まああと食べられることとか、things about my own body and work, well, and being able to eat,
そういうのはなんか、なんとなく当たり前じゃないなとか、その感謝する気持ちが本当に多かったんだけど、things like that, somehow, I felt like they're not just a given, I really had a lot of that feeling of gratitude, but
As for transportation, especially trains, trains in Japan not running this much,
Well, of course there are times like when there was a really big earthquake, but
So I really never imagined that happening in my own area.
So trains are really something to be grateful for, even though it's obvious.
Well, they didn't exist in the past, right.
Way back in the past.
There weren't any way back then, and when I think that everyone walked and such, it's really amazing.
Well, the same goes for being able to use smartphones now.
We now take it for granted that we have the internet, watch YouTube, listen to podcasts like this, but
If the internet disappeared now, well, first of all I couldn't do my work.
うん。Yeah.
Also it would be hard to talk to anyone, right.
I talk to almost everyone on LINE now, so,
Well, of course I can talk to my online students using the internet, so
Yeah, I really can't imagine a world without the internet.
Can you all imagine it?
What couldn't you do if you couldn't use the internet?
There are so many things, right.
For example, well, you couldn't book plane tickets and such, right.
Then you'd have to go to the airport to buy a ticket.
Or you'd have to go to a travel agency to buy a ticket or something.
A travel agency,
Even at the airport,
To get to the airport I look up bus or train times, so I couldn't do that either.
Since I look it up online, I couldn't, so I'd have to go to the station and ask the station staff.
Station staff
means the staff at the station.
Also, I couldn't shop either.
Well, I don't really shop
誰かの誕生日プレゼントを買うときにネットで買ってwhen I buy someone a birthday present I often buy it online and
そのまま友達の家に配送してもらうことが多いのでそれもできないhave it delivered straight to my friend's house, so I couldn't do that
either.
Yeah, well, but I could buy it myself at a store and ask the store, so that's fine.
But, wait, IC cards wouldn't work either.
ICEven if they worked, you couldn't charge them. IC
You couldn't charge an IC card. Charging an IC card,
charging means adding money to the card.
It means putting money in.
You couldn't do that either, and
it would quite affect daily life.
It would cause problems, right.
Trouble means it's a problem, that it would be inconvenient.
So, how about it, everyone?
If you couldn't use the internet, what couldn't you do?
Really, there are so many things you can't do, right?
Probably besides what I just said, in daily life it's already taken for granted to use the internet to do things.
So you might not think of it right now.
It's too taken for granted to think of right away. Ah,
I mean, you can't even do email.
I could just do my work.
Yeah, that's right.
Of course, without the internet you can't send email, so for example
Some materials are sent from the school.
They're sent attached by email, you know,
The materials are sent, but
Well then, those materials,
For example, would the school print them out and deliver them to me as a letter, by post?
How many days would that take?
When you think about it like that,
Well, in the past that was normal, right? In the era without email, everything was printed on paper,
And delivered by mail, I think, so you couldn't get the materials right away.
It would take at least about two days, I think, but with email you get it in an instant.
Something you can get in that instant takes two days or so.
In an instant, no, it's scary.
And, you know, a long time ago, before I became a teacher, when I was working at a company,
I was organizing documents for my department.
Well, the department's
Organizing documents, when I was organizing documents,
I found very old materials from decades ago, I found documents.
Probably in that era, there were no printers, there were no copiers.
So everything was handwritten.
There were probably no computers at that time either, well, even if there were,
There was like one per department.
A very, very long time ago,
Nowadays each person has one computer,
And I think many people work on computers, but in that really, really long-ago time,
There were computers, but
I think, for example, five people had to share one, or ten people could only use one.
I guess since computers could only be used for really important things, everyone wrote by hand themselves,
That's what they did.
It makes you wonder how much time that would take.
It's really amazing.
And well, thinking about all these things, living without a computer or without a smartphone,
I can't imagine it.
But when I was a student, well, when I was a child there were no smartphones, that's right.
There was no SNS like now, just email and phone calls.
そう。Right.
Well, even so we could contact friends.
And at that time that was the only function, so we weren't dissatisfied.
Because having only that was normal.
But nowadays it's taken for granted that smartphones have all kinds of functions, so when you can't use them,
it's really inconvenient.
不便。Inconvenient.
No, but you know, recently I often see on social media quite a lot of people saying they want to go back to Heisei,
Heisei, now Japan is in Reiwa
です。.
In Reiwa,
and before Reiwa was Heisei.
And, Heisei, honestly I like Heisei better too.
AI hadn't developed this much yet,
今と比べたらまあちょっと不便なんだけど、でも平成の時に流行ったものとかcompared to now it was a bit inconvenient, but there are people posting on social media about things that were popular in the Heisei era,
あ、things that were trendy, and I was watching that the other day. Ah,
I think that slightly inconvenient time back then
was nice.
Well, now is more convenient so of course there are many good things.
But what I think is really contradictory is
こんなにAIが発達して便利になって私たちはいろんなことができるようになったにもかかわらずeven though AI has developed so much and become convenient and we can do so many things,
because of that, various problems have also come up.
I think when something becomes convenient, problems will definitely occur.
I think that's inseparable, definitely related.
Well, for example in Japan, when everyone contacts each other now, in Japan people often use LINE.
And LINE is really convenient.
But because LINE was created, the problem of bullying on LINE
has occurred.
Yeah, and scams using LINE,
well, scams often come up in the news.
That is, deceiving people to steal money.
There are really all kinds of scams.
And what I really want students to be careful about is that there are a lot of part-time job scams.
For example, there's a part-time job where you can earn 300,000 yen a day.
They say they get LINE messages from complete strangers asking if they want to do it.
Um, in one day
you absolutely cannot earn 300,000 yen.
There's no such good job.
So first you should be suspicious.
Even if today's university students work part-time for a day,
no matter how high-paying, I think they can only earn about 20,000 to 30,000 yen at most.
Yeah, I think 20,000 to 30,000 yen is on the high side.
But compared to that, 300,000 yen is strange, right?
You really have to think that it means you'll be doing something dangerous.
But still, for students who are a bit short on money,
they might think, oh, with 300,000 yen I can pay my tuition, you know, they end up thinking that.
うん。Yeah.
But there's no such good job, you can't earn money that easily.
はい。Yes.
Hmm, yeah, why do they think they can earn easily?
Of course, if you really need money and have no peace of mind, you might think that.
That's true.
うん。Yeah.
But I want you to think a little.
There's no way a job like that exists.
うん。Yeah.
And on top of that, they're students.
For example, if you've already been doing a specialized job for 20 or 30 years.
If you had a career where you could say only I can do this job
It might be possible, but many students haven't worked yet, right?
So I think you should really think about why you would get 300,000 yen.
Because the starting salary for new graduates in Japan now is...
It doesn't reach 300,000 yen, right?
Can I quickly look up the starting salary for new graduates?
Starting salaries for new graduates have gone up, I think, on average
At a big company, a really large company, 300,000 yen might be possible, but
The current average is around 250,000 yen.
そうRight.
Even though the starting salary is 250,000 yen, for a student who has never worked to earn 300,000 yen in one day
I think that's almost impossible.
うん。Yeah.
Because the starting salary is a whole month's pay, you know.
It's the pay for the first month of working, so 250,000 for one month.
That's the average.
So how can you earn 300,000 in one day? You have to think that a deal that sounds too good has a catch.
I think that's important.
Yeah, but this kind of scam is common.
Lately, I try to tell students about it as much as I can, yeah,
I really want you to be careful.
はい。Yes.
So, today we talked about what's taken for granted.
What is something you take for granted?
Also, what we talked about earlier — if you couldn't use the internet, what would trouble you the most?
Please let me know that in the comments too.
Yes, I'd like to end today's radio here.
See you again on the next radio show.
Bye-bye.
