SuzukaHello everyone, I'm Suzuka. Suzuka
Welcome to my podcast.
Lately, it's really gotten cold,
The color of the trees is gradually changing, and I somehow feel autumn.
So today I'd like to talk about autumn in Japan.
I live in Korea now, but both Japan and Korea have four seasons, so
I feel there's not that big a difference in how autumn feels.
How about it, is it cold where you all live?
Or is it still hot?
You know, I really love autumn.
Simply because it's comfortable to live in.
You know, I'm the type who gets irritated because summer is too hot.
So I stay home a lot in summer, but once autumn comes I suddenly want to go outside.
Once autumn comes, I just can't stay quiet.
I just want to go outside no matter what.
Today, as someone who loves autumn so much, I'll talk about what I do in autumn,
And what autumn in Japan is like, so please listen while drinking coffee or while working.
Please listen.
So right away, in Japan there are many expressions like "autumn of __".
Autumn of appetite, autumn of reading.
Autumn of sports, autumn of art,
Autumn of outings, like that, expressions meaning autumn is the season to do this.
We really use these expressions often in Japan.
When autumn comes, you often see them on TV and in stores.
Like, why don't you start your __ autumn.
で、And,
As for why it's all autumn, this is probably just my idea, but
I think it's because autumn is just the right season to do anything.
It's not hot like summer, and not cold like winter, it's comfortable, right.
So I think that's why there are so many expressions saying autumn is a good season to do this and that.
This is the same as the reason I said I like autumn earlier.
Now I'll talk about my autumn.
First, I'll talk about the autumn of reading and the autumn of sports,
I'll combine these two.
That's because I read and exercise all year round.
So honestly I don't have the feeling of starting reading because it's autumn.
By the way, for exercise I only do yoga now.
But I've done various things.
Running, strength training, tennis, pilates.
Well, since I do these all year round, I don't think it's really because it's autumn.
And, going back a bit to the reading topic,
When I say I like reading, for some reason people think I only read difficult books,
But actually I love novels.
Not difficult at all.
Just like everyone likes dramas and movies, I just read books fast and like it.
By the way, right now I'm reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.
It's a famous book, so maybe some of you listening have read it.
I especially love mystery novels.
I often read works by Keigo Higashino.
He's famous, right.
I wonder if some of you know him.
And my goal is to read all of Keigo Higashino's works.
Also, well, I read books that make me think about myself just as much as novels.
For example, books about why people feel anxious, or what kind of mindset is needed to reduce that anxiety,
books with that kind of content.
I really love psychology and brain science and stuff, it's so interesting.
Is there anyone else like that? Ah,
そう。Yes.
And, actually I'm now preparing a podcast about recommended books for studying Japanese.
It's just kind of difficult, you know,
Please look forward to it, I think it will be up someday.
で、And,
I read books all year round like that, but in autumn my way of reading changes just a little.
That is, I read outside.
The place is the park in front of my house or the rooftop of my home.
I lay out a picnic sheet there.
And I bring a warm drink with me, and read my book while drinking it.
And I also do knitting.
Yes, I have an update here.
I said before on the podcast that I wanted to finish my cardigan and show it to everyone,
言ってたのに、すいません終わっていませんって言って、ついこの間ね、上げたと思うんですけど、and then I said sorry, it's not finished yet, I think I posted that just recently,
everyone, it's finished.
Yes, I did it, I finally finished it, the first cardigan I've ever made in my life.
It's a bright red cardigan.
And, what I'm most particular about is the heart-shaped buttons. Ah,
maybe I'll put a photo around here, I want everyone to see it.
A one-of-a-kind cardigan in the world.
Well, normally I don't think I'd buy such a flashy color, but I just found it so cute that I decided to make it,
I don't regret it.
But it's a bit thin, so it might be a little cold to wear in autumn.
Since I finished this one, now I've started knitting a sweater.
This one is a bit more difficult again.
It's a sweater with really a lot of patterns in it, so I'm full of worry, but I'll keep working at it steadily.
I'll get it completed.
で、And,
As for how long I stay outside,
well, I often spend time outside from about 2pm to 4:30pm.
Also, this year I even bought a small table.
I'm fully prepared.
But there's one problem, it's so comfortable that I sometimes fall asleep.
Like, I thought I was reading a book, but somehow I end up sleeping.
And, this is a bit strange even to me,
actually I can't read books or study in cafes.
In cafes, I get distracted by the sounds around me and can't concentrate.
But for some reason, I'm fine outside.
I wonder why.
Well, on the rooftop there's really no people at all, so it's comfortable, you know. Ah,
Yes, and when I'm lying on the rooftop, I can see lots of airplanes.
And while watching them, I think about where they might be going.
And this
There's a website where you can look up where this airplane, where planes are flying from and to right now,
それを見すぎて、and I look at it too much,
あ今の時間でこっちからこっちに行くんだったらあそこに行くのかなlike, if it's going from here to here at this time, maybe it's going there,
and I've gotten to the point where I can kind of play a guessing game with it.
It's kind of one of my favorite times.
You know, I said earlier that I bring a warm drink.
Let me talk about that drink.
What I bring is homemade apple yuzu tea.
I really love this, and I start craving it as soon as it gets even a little cold.
How I found out about this drink is,
There's a cafe chain in Korea called Mega Coffee, and a student recommended a drink from there to me.
If you translate the Korean menu name into Japanese, it's called apple yuzu tea, and it was just...
It was incredibly delicious, and since then it's become my favorite drink.
At first I was going to the cafe to buy it almost every day, but there were two problems.
First, it costs money.
Second, I hated going outside to buy it when it's cold.
I want a warm drink because I'm cold,
私は寒くて暖かい飲み物が飲みたいのに、but I hated having to walk out in the cold to go buy it,
寒い中を歩いて買いに行かないといけないっていうのがso I wondered if I could make it myself and searched like crazy until I found how.
But it's also super easy to make.
Here's how to make it.
This is my way, but I put an apple mint tea bag in the tumbler I always use.
Then I add Korean yuzu tea, and just pour in hot water. Oh,
What is Korean yuzu tea?
It's the base for yuzu tea.
It's kind of like yuzu jam, and there's this thing where you add hot water to it and drink it,
It just depends on my mood at the time.
Yeah, that's right.
If you add a lot of yuzu tea, it gets that much sweeter.
I don't like it when it's too sweet, so I add just the right amount.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Really, well...
If you ask me whether it tastes exactly the same, maybe not, but it's my version that gets close to it.
I'd love for you to try it if you get a chance.
Please do.
And,
で、I make this and take a picnic sheet, a book, and the drink up to the rooftop,
これを作ってレジャーシートと本と飲み物持って屋上に行って、and yeah, in autumn these kinds of warm drinks are delicious, aren't they.
Well, talking about drinks makes me want to talk about food too.
Have you all heard of Japan's 'autumn of appetite'?
I really enjoyed this when I was in Japan.
First, McDonald's Tsukimi Burger.
This comes out in autumn.
So I looked forward to it every year.
This is a hamburger with a fried egg inside.
I think quite a few Japanese people would say they look forward to this.
So if you have Japanese friends, please ask them.
Whether they've ever had a Tsukimi Burger.
Have you ever had a Tsukimi Burger.
Also, I just love all kinds of potato-type foods.
So I especially love sweet potato sweets.
But it's not just sweets.
I really love sweet potato rice too.
It's rice cooked with sweet potatoes in it.
That's delicious.
A little sweet.
Just a little bit.
うん。Yeah.
And then, sanma, Pacific saury, which is in season in autumn.
I love grilling and eating that too.
In season means the time when that food tastes the best.
And Mont Blanc is delicious too, right?
It's a chestnut cake. Oh,
I ate chestnut tiramisu yesterday, and wow, that was delicious too.
Since I started living in Korea,
I feel like I pay less attention to autumn-limited products than when I was in Japan.
But of course, Korea also has lots of delicious autumn foods.
For example, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, persimmons — those are the same as Japan, and in Korea, the fish called in Japanese
konoshiro, gizzard shad, is also often eaten in autumn.
I ate it last year too.
It went really well with soju.
Delicious.
And, in autumn, I feel like fig cakes increase a lot.
You know, I
ずっと気になってたけどhad always been curious about it, but
I didn't know the taste so I was scared to eat it and never had it, but
this year I ate a fig cake for the first time.
My impression was, oh, ah,
ああこれが美味しいのかah, so this is what it tastes like,
kind of like that.
Like, no, it wasn't bad at all, but
my expectations were too high, so it wasn't so delicious that it moved me.
Ah, so it tastes like this.
Ohhh.
Okay, okay.
like that.
No no no.
Not delicious. I mean,
It's not bad.
It was kind of a grown-up taste.
I'm just not used to it yet.
はい。Yes.
Well, tastes differ from person to person.
うん。Yeah.
はい。Yes.
で、And,
um, oh, right, in Korea, when it gets cold you start seeing bungeoppang stalls.
Well, it's a fish-shaped snack like Japanese taiyaki, I love it, but,
well, that's kind of getting into winter talk, so I'll stop here.
And when I think about it like this, I'm really enjoying this autumn of appetite too.
But on the other hand, what I don't quite get is the autumn of art.
No, I am interested.
I do, but
I don't really know how to enjoy it.
I wonder, should I just look at paintings?
I've seen Monet's paintings a little bit once before.
What I thought at that time was, oh, I really like this person's use of color
That's what I thought, but well, that's about it.
And I don't really have much knowledge about art.
So I'm not sure how to enjoy it.
I wonder, does just finding colors I like like this count as enjoying it?
How about you all, how do you enjoy the autumn of art?
If you have any recommended ways to enjoy it, please let me know.
I want to be able to enjoy it a bit more from now on too.
うん。Yeah.
And today I've talked about various kinds of autumn, but
I think the one that suits me best right now is probably the autumn of outings.
Everyone, do you know the word 'kouraku'?
Kouraku' means going out and having fun.
Like traveling or going out.
Actually, I hadn't really been consciously using this word itself.
But when I thought about the meaning, I thought this is definitely me.
You know, when autumn comes, I just want to travel no matter what.
To say how much I want to go, last year I went to Saga and Fukuoka in October.
And I went to Hiroshima in November.
And this year too, a trip to Busan, Korea at the end of October, and to Hiroshima in November has been decided.
As for Busan, at the time of this recording I haven't gone yet, but I'm planning to go to Busan very soon.
The moment autumn comes, my travel plans just don't stop.
By the way, about last year's Saga trip, for those who thought, why Saga?
Well, the flights were cheap and there was a direct flight, so I went.
And this November's Hiroshima trip is a family trip this time.
So, well, I didn't decide the destination, but last year's Hiroshima remains
as such a wonderful memory for me, so I'm really happy I can go again.
After I come back, I plan to tell you all about what I did.
And why I like autumn travel is, this is also super simple,
it's basically because it's cool and comfortable.
I'm not traveling just to see the autumn leaves.
Also, when I think about it, I can't really think of
any bad memories from autumn trips, or rather, I just really love traveling itself.
So regardless of the season, traveling makes me happy.
うん。あ、Yeah. Oh,
by the way, the day after this video comes out is Halloween.
And I just said I like going out, but
I can't handle it when there are too many people.
The thing is,
I've been to Shibuya Halloween just once.
And what happened was, there were so many people I couldn't get home.
After getting off at Shibuya Station, just walking through the crowd was all I could manage.
At that time I went with three people.
Even though we were holding hands, we got pushed and pushed by the crowd and got separated, and I lost one of my friends too, but
人が多すぎるから携帯の電波が使えなくて連絡も取れなくてなんかもう変な汗が出ましたthere were so many people that my phone signal didn't work and I couldn't contact anyone, and I started breaking out in a weird sweat
でそんなことしてたらもう終電に乗れなくなっちゃってand while all that was happening, I ended up missing the last train
朝まで渋谷にいるしかないっていう状況になってand I was left in a situation where I had no choice but to stay in Shibuya until morning
でも周りは酔っ払ってる人も多くてもかなりしんどかったですbut there were a lot of drunk people around too, so it was pretty tough
でねAnd then,
次の日なんですけど私それまで無遅刻無欠席だったんですthe next day, up until then I had never been late or absent
I had never once been late or missed school.
And yet, I missed school for the first time.
I had planned to go to school without sleeping, but I was just tired in so many ways that I fell asleep.
And once I missed a day, I was no longer perfect in attendance, right?
Then I kind of lost my motivation for school a little.
Since then, well, I haven't really done anything special for Halloween.
So today I talked about my marumaru autumn.
How about you?
Which marumaru autumn are you?
Also, please tell me how to enjoy the autumn of art, how I should enjoy it.
That's it for today.
