Everyone, when you go on a trip, do you buy souvenirs?
Do you buy them for yourself?
Or do you buy them for friends or family?
Do you also buy them for people at work?
In Japan, there is a culture of buying souvenirs not only for family and friends but also for people at work when you go on a trip.
But why do people buy souvenirs for people at work?
And not just for one person, but they also buy sweets with lots of pieces so they can hand them out to everyone.
Let'sToday I'd like to talk about Japanese souvenir culture. Let's
Nihongo!Nihongo!
Hello everyone, I'm Sakura from Nihongo Classroom.
In this podcast, I'll talk about Japanese culture and some interesting topics in natural Japanese.
Please relax and listen.
First, what is omiyage?
When you go on a trip, at that place.
It's something you buy at that place and bring back home.
You often buy it to give to someone like family or friends.
If you look it up in a dictionary, it comes up as souvenir in English, but the nuance in English
is sometimes a little different.
Nuance means the subtle meaning or feeling a word has.
The English word souvenir also has the nuance of something you give to someone, but you also use it for something you buy for yourself to remember the trip, right?
The Japanese word omiyage is also used in such cases, but it's often used to mean something you give to someone, like I bought omiyage for my family because I went on a trip, or I bought omiyage for everyone at work.
Actually, in Japan there has long been a culture of bringing back things from travel destinations and sharing them with family and people around you.
Tabisaki means the place you traveled to.
In the past, many trips were to shrines and temples.
And people would bring back things they bought or got there and share them with everyone.
So the Japanese word omiyage may have long had a sense of sharing and giving to people around you, rather than enjoying travel memories by yourself.
Even now, I think many people think about buying something for their family or what to buy for friends when they go on a trip.
When I go on a trip, I often buy souvenirs for my parents who live far away or for friends nearby.
I often buy sweets or...
or coffee, or famous foods from that travel destination.
I mostly buy miscellaneous goods for myself, but I find it a bit difficult when giving to others.
Zakka means small items like pens, notebooks, photo frames, interior goods,
small items, accessories.
With zakka, people have quite different tastes in colors and designs, right?
Thinking things like I like this but Dad might not, it's quite difficult, so for gifts to others I often choose food rather than zakka.
How about you all?
When you buy souvenirs for others, what do you often buy?
I'd like to hear about souvenirs in Japan too.
I wonder if omamori charms or sweets are common.
When choosing souvenirs, what I care about most is whether I can only buy it in that place.
These days are really convenient, aren't they?
If you have the internet, you can buy anything.
Even in Tokyo, you can buy Australian sweets or Hawaiian food.
You can buy anything anywhere, so if you've gone all the way on a trip, I want to
bring back and give something you can only buy in that place.
Sekkaku means feeling like since you have that opportunity, you want to cherish that chance.
It's that feeling like, since I'm going all the way to Hawaii, I want to buy something Hawaiian, or since I came all the way to Taiwan, I want to buy a Taiwan-like souvenir.
I don't buy things I think I've seen online.
And what's a bit unusual about Japanese souvenir culture
is souvenirs for the workplace.
A workplace means a place where you work, like a company.
While you are on leave, people at work may help you or do your work for you,
so sometimes people give souvenirs to say thank you for covering during the time off.
I currently teach Japanese at home and don't go to a company.
So now I don't buy for a company, but
I used to be a teacher at an elementary school, so I used to buy souvenirs for the workplace.
Like, teachers who came back from a trip, fellow teachers,
これどうぞってお土産を机に置いて配ってくれるんですよねwould say here you go and leave souvenirs on desks and hand them out.
Ah,
I was so happy, saying thank you.
And then when I went on a trip myself.
Well, I received souvenirs too, so I felt bad if I was the only one who didn't buy anything.
Of course,
It's not like there's a rule that you absolutely must buy for the workplace, but somehow there's that kind of atmosphere, so, ah,
I sometimes bought them thinking I probably should.
Is this quite a Japanese-like feeling?
It's like, since everyone does it, I feel I have to do it too.
But I actually like buying souvenirs itself, so I didn't mind it at all.
While traveling, it's fun to buy things thinking, ah, that person would like this, or, ah, this looks delicious.
But choosing because you feel you have to buy isn't very fun, is it.
This kind of feeling is called a sense of obligation, not doing it because you really want to,
but a sense of responsibility where you do it reluctantly because you have to.
You're perceptive.
If it becomes not wanting to give souvenirs but feeling you have to buy souvenirs, even though you came on a trip, it becomes a bit less fun, right.
How about in your countries?
When you go on a trip, do you buy souvenirs for people at work?
Or is it like, it's my own trip so I'll only buy for private people?

And I recently found a recommended souvenir other than food.
Postcards.
In Japanese we also call them hagaki.
You buy a postcard at your travel destination, write a letter, put a stamp on it, and send it from there.
Actually, I wasn't the one who started this first,
My sister went to Finland for her honeymoon, the first trip the two of them took after getting married.
And in Finland.
From Finland, she sent us a postcard with a beautiful photo of Finland to our home.
Like, we did this today.
We went here.
Something like, I'm sure Sakura would love it too.
That made me so happy.
And the Finnish scenery was beautiful too, so I decorated the room with that postcard.
Thinking that she thought of me and wrote it during the trip also made me happy.
Since then, when I go on a trip, I decided to send postcards from the destination.
Sometimes I send them to family, and sometimes I send them to my own home.
You might think, huh, why to your own home.
When we travel as a family, I have the kids write their travel memories.
The children write in cute handwriting.
Like, the sea was fun, or today we ate such-and-such.
They write like that and we send it just as is to our home.
After the trip ends and we return home, and just when we've forgotten about it as we get back to daily life with a let's-do-our-best spirit,
The postcard you sent from your trip arrives. Oh,
it reminds me like, oh I did this, it was fun, and it gives me a little energy, so it's really fun and I recommend it.
Please give it a try, everyone.
Buying things and giving them is nice, but sharing travel memories with someone is such a great idea, isn't it?
But there is one dangerous thing about choosing souvenirs.
That is the excitement you feel at your travel destination.
In Japanese, when you get happy and your mood lifts, we say your tension goes up.
When you go traveling, your excitement goes up, right?
You're surrounded by different scenery, different food, and language too.
The language is different, and shops and things look special.
When I look at something I would never normally buy and think, oh, I really want this, it's so nice, let's buy it, and I buy it, but then when I get back to Japan I'm often like, huh, this feels different.
Especially clothes.
I see them abroad, try them on, think, oh, cute, I'll buy this, and I buy it, but somehow in Japan
wearing it feels a bit embarrassing, a bit off, and I often end up never wearing it.
And the opposite happens too, when on a trip I think, oh, this is cute, I like it,
でもちょっと高いかなとか、重いかも、割れたらどうしようみたいな感じで買うのをやめたんだけど、but it's a bit expensive, or it might be heavy, what if it breaks, so I decide not to buy it,
but back in Japan it keeps nagging at me, like, oh I should have bought it after all.
Last year I went to Indonesia, and there was a super cute
palm-sized Ganesha figurine, and I wondered, oh, what should I do, should I buy it, but in the end I didn't buy it.
But even now I think, oh I should have bought it, so like with clothes, if I buy it I wonder why I bought it,
and if I don't buy it I wish I had, so maybe either way I'll regret it.
