Hi everyone, hello, thank you for listening to my podcast again today
Yes, today I want to make another solo episode talking by myself about what I've been thinking about lately
Yes, I wonder if you all like this kind of episode
There's no particular script, no script, just rambling about what I'm thinking
It's an episode where I just ramble on,
Yes, so as I mentioned a little while ago, lately neuroscience
Which means neuroscience, it's the science of the brain.
It's just called brain science, but brain science,
I've been studying it a bit in a course lately,
I've been learning a lot, so I thought I'd share what I learned in the neuroscience course in simple Japanese,
And I'll start from today.
Yes, um, well,
This is something common to everyone listening to this, right.
The brain is something everyone in the world has, if you're human you all have one.
Studying neuroscience in Japanese
I don't think you often get the chance to do that, but if you tried to study it, it's probably a topic you can only
I think, but as much as possible, as much as possible, there are limits, but in the simplest Japanese possible
I thought I'd share this kind of difficult topic with you all.
Then instead of studying Japanese,
I thought you could learn something new in Japanese, so I want to try that challenge.
In this podcast I've talked about things other than Japanese language and Japanese culture before,
But from now on a bit more
I'll also share little bits about difficult neuroscience
That's what I'm thinking.
Yes, well, neuroscience is really interesting.
You all too,
I wonder if you've studied it, even if you haven't studied it
I think you've heard about neuroscience, there's a lot of research,
Lately there's a lot of
content on that kind of topic, I don't know, I don't know, I really don't know, yeah, but it's an interesting topic, right.
I'm interested in psychology and,
Well, I'm interested in humans, like why humans take certain actions,
Or why they think that way.
Like what is something in English, or what is love, I have various interests
And sometimes when I start thinking about one thing I can't stop
I think it's called a rabbit hole in English, you can't get out of it and just keep
For example, there are times when I research one topic I learned like that online or read books about it,
This topic I'm talking about today I really
私の中でわあ面白いなと思ったのでシェアしたいなと思いましたはいもうイントロ長いよということでthought, wow, this is interesting, so I wanted to share it. Yes, the intro is already long, so
I want to get to the main topic
Today's topic is about confirmation bias
Even Japanese people would say, what is confirmation bias, so let me explain.
Yes, do you all know bias?
Bias, bias is an English word, like we say I'm biased, right.
I think it's quite difficult to explain confirmation bias even in Japanese, so first I'll give the English translation.
Confirmation bias means confirmation bias, and what it means is,
The human brain,
When you believe something is like this, you look for evidence to prove what you believed
It seems that it starts to look for it.
Yes, this is already difficult, it's difficult to explain this simply.
Well, I'll explain the words a little bit, simply.
Well, what our brain believes.
Well, let me give an example.
For example, for example.
Let's say you all think, I'm not liked by people, everyone doesn't like me.
Then you start looking for evidence for what you're thinking, what you're believing.
So for example, let's say a friend is busy and doesn't contact you at all.
Yeah, I keep giving this kind of
I'm only giving these kinds of examples, but actually that friend was just busy and it doesn't mean at all that they don't like you
or that they hate you.
But with that kind of confirmation bias, with the bias that I'm not liked by people
when you look at that fact, you think, ah, as I thought.
You end up thinking that your friend doesn't like you, or that as expected, I'm not liked by people.
So it's very
バランスの取れた考え方、a balanced way of thinking,
not a well-balanced way of thinking, but biased — biased means poorly balanced.
Yeah, you tend to develop a way of thinking that's skewed to the right or left.
Yeah, for another example
Let's say you think my boss is not a good person, or this person has a bad personality.
Then you only start to see the unpleasant parts of your boss, and you think, as I thought, this boss really has a bad personality,
and gradually you start to see them that way, as in, this person is not a good person after all.
That's what confirmation bias is.
Well, I just gave quite everyday examples, but for example, say this politician is right.
If you think this politician is right,
そのバイアスがあるとその人がやってるwith that bias, the things that person is doing that are
悪いこととか良くないこと、あんまり国のためにならないことは全部bad or not good, things that aren't really for the good of the country, you completely
and you just can't see them anymore.
You only become able to see the good things that person is doing.
Because you think this is a good politician, this is a good person, you become unable to see the bad things they're doing.
It becomes a biased way of thinking —
well, the tendency that everyone has, tendency means tendency.
Well, in that way.
It seems the brain thinks that way.
Well, I just talked about it, but there may be people who don't understand, so in English
I'll just say one sentence
confirmation bias is like you have a belief and your brain start to look for evidence to confirm your beliefconfirmation bias is like you have a belief and your brain start to look for evidence to confirm your belief
っていう感じだからso it's like that
もうもともと信じていることがあってその信じていることを証明するためにyou already have something you believe, and in order to prove what you believe
その証拠を探すyou look for evidence
それが確証バイアスっていうthat is what confirmation bias is, and what I recently studied in neuroscience and found interesting is that when you go like, ah, as expected, or
You look for
and when you prove it in your head, when you think, ah, as I thought, dopamine is apparently released.
I think everyone has heard of dopamine, dopamine is like a reward,
うん、あのreward system、rewardみたいなyeah, like the reward system, reward-like
脳の物質なんですけど、it's a substance in the brain,
When that comes out, um, that way of thinking apparently gets even stronger.
And that dopamine is released, apparently, whether it's for something positive or something negative.
For example, I think that I'm smart.
When I find evidence like, see, I am smart after all, dopamine is released too, and
I think that I'm stupid, and
And when I find evidence that I'm stupid, I think see, I knew it, and dopamine is apparently released.
So whether it's good or bad for you doesn't matter
Apparently dopamine is released in both cases.
Whether it's good or bad, apparently dopamine is released when you find that evidence.
Right, so when you think see, I knew it, you feel a bit good, like, um, it's a reward
It's called a brain chemical, but
I wonder what brain chemical is in English, substance? I forgot, but anyway that dopamine is released.
Yeah so.
So when dopamine is released, that way of thinking becomes a habit, it's a vicious cycle, really.
Yeah, well, thinking becomes biased
Yeah, if you repeat that over and over again like that, you develop a habit of thinking.
Yeah, so apparently you end up falling into the same pattern of thinking.
So instead of assuming that this is how it is
What I recently learned is that it's important to also expose yourself to the opposite
the opposite way of thinking from what you believe or what you think.
So apparently it's really important to listen to different people's stories and opinions.
It's related to what I talked about a little while ago, but I learned this in neuroscience too.
Each person has something like a filter in their brain, and about 99.999 percent of information
Apparently all the information that comes into your eyes is cut off, thrown away.
And that 0.0001 percent of information that does come in is information that came in
フィルターを通して入れた情報だから、through your own filter, so
What I mean is, actually we can't see 99.999 percent, that's what it means.
So the brain
apparently receives, takes in information in a way that's convenient for itself.
だからSo
Not everyone thinks the way I think, studying neuroscience made me understand that even more
Um, I came to understand that.
That's because I learned that everyone perceives and thinks differently, but
Well, what I wanted to say is, if you decide that this is how it is and
look at something, I feel like you can't see the real truth anymore.
Yeah, and this is something I thought even before studying neuroscience.
Yeah, so, for example, what I found interesting studying languages was,
The same thing can be good or bad depending on the culture, right.
That's also like a cultural filter, because I'm looking through the filter of Japanese culture,
そのThat
It's just that I think it's bad, but if other people look at it, it's not at all
It's not bad, I think the way of seeing it is completely different.
For example, um, yeah, interrupting someone when they're talking,
In Japan it's quite a rude thing.
When someone is talking, and you interrupt them to say what you want to say, it's rude, so
When our speech overlaps a little, when we talk at the same time, we say oh sorry sorry or oh please go ahead.
So it's not like me me me me me
When you interrupt someone, you kind of yield to them, like please go ahead.
But, for example, I'm in Spain now, and interrupting someone isn't really
That bad, or rather, yeah, on the contrary that
Because the conversation becomes more interesting,
まあ人の話ずっと遮っちゃうと良くないと思うんだけど、例えば喧嘩じゃないけど何か一つのトピックについてディベートしてる時に、well, I don't think it's good to keep interrupting people, but for example, not a fight, but when debating about one topic,
日本だったら最後まで話を聞いて、それから自分の話をするっていうスタイルなんだけどこっちだと、うんと、in Japan the style is to listen until the end and then say your own part, but here, um,
まあ二人でディベートを作り上げていくっていう感じ、なんかこうit's more like the two people build up the debate together, like
人の話を遮ってもeven if you interrupt someone
I felt that it's really important to properly state your own opinion.
On the contrary, if you stay silent and say nothing, you can't even have a debate.
自分の意見をちゃんと言うこととか、まあ人の話を遮ったとしてもsaying your own opinion properly, or even if you interrupt someone
ちゃんとその話に入っていくことproperly joining into that conversation
っていうのがこっちでは大切なんだなって思ったり、もうちょっと簡単な例でいくとis what's important here, I thought, and to give a simpler example,
In Japan, it's okay to make that slurping sound when eating ramen,
you're allowed to slurp it, right?
But if you do that in America or in the West, it's very rude.
People think it's really dirty, right?
But in Japan that's a good thing, or rather, that's how you eat ramen.
So even for one single thing, if the culture is different the meaning is completely different.
That has nothing to do with culture or country, it's each individual person.
That's what I started to think while studying neuroscience, that we're all different.
なんて言えるのかなこれが正しいって思うことはhow can I put it, thinking that this is correct
ちょっと言い方はthe way to say it is a bit
きついんですけど傲慢というか傲慢っていうのはまあちょっと偉そうなことでharsh, but it's arrogant, well arrogant is kind of acting superior
英語でなんだっけ傲慢ってなんだっけみんなwhat was arrogant in English, what was it everyone
傲慢ってなんだっけwhat was arrogant again
まあ偉そうとかまああの謙虚の反対ですよねwell, acting superior, it's the opposite of humble, right
I forgot the English word, wait a moment, arrogant
oh right, arrogant, I forgot such a basic word.
Yes, arrogance means arrogant, but thinking like this is correct
何かを見たりとか、and looking at something,
これが正しいって自分の意見を誰かに押し付ける、pushing your opinion on someone that this is correct,
ね、もうこれが正しいっていう風にこう押し付ける、to forceっていう意味なんだけど、押し付けることはpushing it like this is correct, it means to force, pushing it on someone
I really felt that is arrogant.
So when I think about my old self, I think now looking back that I was very arrogant saying this is how it is.
So even in daily life
for example, saying this is like this, in Japanese there's a slightly difficult word, sennyuukan, preconception.
Right, well, preconception means deciding it's like this even though you don't know yet.
Yeah, judging people by appearance without really knowing them is also a preconception, right?
例えばFor example,
in Japan, if you dye your hair like me, many people have the preconception that you're a flashy person or not a proper person.
Well it's changed a bit now, but in the past when job hunting, well maybe still now.
When job hunting you weren't allowed to have blonde hair like this.
Everyone had jet-black hair, and many people cut their hair short.
うん。Yeah.
Well, if someone had long hair they had to tie it up like this to look serious,
judging someone by appearance without knowing them at all like that.
That's also a preconception, right?
If you have that kind of preconception, you can only see them that way.
If you think this person is a bad person, you can only see them that way.
And if you think this person is a good person, you only see the good parts.
So, so, in the early stages of romance
I think it's called that honeymoon phase, like the first three months when you're all lovey-dovey, you can't see the other person's flaws, right?
This is, you know, what was it, love is blind, like blind
Blind means a person who can't see, but what was it, in English love is love is can't see
love is blind。love is blind.
I forgot, but there's a famous quote like that, right?
It's really true that
あのこの人はいい人だみたいなそのlike this person is a good person, that
自分の頭の中で作った理想本当にもう完璧な人っていうthe ideal perfect person you made up in your own head
Because you have that ideal
嫌なとこ見えなくなるんですよねそうだからそういうふうにあの恋愛でもあるようにこうだって思ってbecause you have this ideal, this perfect person you created in your head, this really perfect person
When you look at it thinking it's like that, well whether it's that person or that event
When you look at something
ありのままの姿ありのままそれが見えなくなる本当のことが見えなくなるyou can't see it as it is, you can't see the real thing
That's just our tendency.
That's what I thought, and I found it really interesting.
And also, like I said earlier, I thought it's scary that dopamine is released when you think, see, I was right.
正直Honestly
Because then your thinking just gets more and more
I'll talk about that in a different topic, but I thought the words "I don't know" are really powerful.
Yes, I want to talk about this in the next topic.
Yes, so thank you for listening today.
I'm filming this video alone right now, but people really tell me it's like I'm talking with someone.
When I'm filming like this and someone is working in another room
they often ask me, Miku, were you talking with someone? That's how much it feels like I'm talking alone but.
Through the screen I feel like I'm talking with everyone, so thank you so much.
話For listening to my talk
