Good night, Japanese with Shun.

Good evening, everyone.

I'm Shun, a Japanese teacher.

How was your day today?

How was your weekend?

Now, today I'd like to talk about a country I recently visited.

I recently went to Laos.

First of all, do you know the country called Laos?

Do you know where it is?

Laos is in Southeast Asia.

It's between Thailand and Vietnam.

I really have many memories of Laos.

はい。Yes.

First, when I took my first solo trip,

I went to Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

So it's one of the countries I visited on my first solo trip.

Well, I have both good memories and bad memories.

First, a bit of a bad memory.

Well, I'll start by talking about the tough memory.

The first time I went to Laos, I was 18, 19 years old.

At this time, I entered Laos from Cambodia.

Well, I've talked about this story on an old podcast before, so

some of you may remember it.

I went from Cambodia to a town called Pakse in the south of Laos

。17. 17

When I went 17 years ago, in this town.

There really wasn't much.

There was only the beautiful Mekong River.

But that was nice.

はい。Yes.

There weren't many foreigners either.

But I was really able to see and feel the life of Laotian people,

their laid-back life, and that was really great.

うん。Yeah.

Yes, when I crossed the border between Cambodia and Laos, I felt a little

sick.

When I arrived in Pakse, Laos, I got sicker and sicker.

I had a fever and couldn't get out of bed.

At this time I was staying in a guesthouse.

At that time there were still no hostels at all.

はい。Yes.

Yes, I stayed in bed for about two days.

I couldn't eat anything.

On the third day, I thought I had to eat something, so I went to the market to buy food.

There, I collapsed on the street.

When I woke up.

I was in a hospital.

I was hospitalized for four days.

Yes, and then I continued my solo trip again.

Well, at nineteen, I think it was really an amazing adventure.

At that time I thought I might die.

Yes, it was really tough.

So that's why

I have such memories

In Laos

I was really happy to be able to return again seventeen years later.

This time from Thailand.

I crossed the border on foot.

Well, right after crossing the border

Compared to Thailand, I felt it was still not developed at all.

Yeah, but somehow, back in the old days

It reminded me of when I was backpacking through Southeast Asia.

Yes, I think Thailand and Malaysia have developed a lot compared to the past now.

It was like seeing Thailand and Malaysia as they were in the old days.

Yeah, it made me feel really nostalgic.

Also, people in Laos are always smiling.

Seeing the smiles of the Laotian people made me feel really happy too.

That's right.

Among Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos that I visited on this trip

I was able to experience the most adventure.

So I really had a fun time this time.

うん。Yeah.

Well, of course there were various problems, like not being able to withdraw money from the ATM, or power outages,

There were various problems, but.

I was able to enjoy those too.

Laos is a really small country, and a country with really beautiful nature.

So in Laos I did various activities.

Hiking and tubing, slow boat trips,

I rented a motorbike and went to various lagoons too.

Also, I think I probably made the most friends in Laos.

Really close friends,

Friends that I think I'd like to meet again.

I was able to meet many of them in Laos.

Yes, and in Laos I was drinking beer almost every day

Beerlao

I was drinking a beer called that.

Somehow Beerlao drunk in this Laotian weather was really delicious.

Well, probably because Laos is a small country

You might only be able to drink it in Laos.

I've never seen it in Japan.

I was drinking it every day, so I bought a Beerlao T-shirt as a souvenir for myself.

That's nice.

Yeah, every time I wear it I can remember Laotian beer.

In Laos you have to be careful about various things.

For example, Laotian money cannot be exchanged in other countries.

So you have to spend it all while you're in Laos.

Also, because of the recent war

Prices had all gone up even in Laos.

Of course it's cheaper than Japan, though.

I was surprised at how much more expensive it had become compared to before.

Also, the internet in Laos was really slow

。Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi

was okay, but the data was really slow.

Well, I quite liked this though.

Because the internet isn't very fast, I could travel in a bit of an old-fashioned travel style, so

that was good.

Well, as I said earlier, in Laos I quickly

became close with all kinds of people.

I met a lot of people.

And the town is very compact, so I meet friends every day.

No, it really feels strange.

Yeah, it was like being in my hometown and meeting friends.

Well, the people you meet when you're backpacking

really often share the same values, so I felt it was easier to become friends than meeting normally.

Coming to Laos reminded me of the old backpacking style.

Without booking anything.

Traveling without deciding on plans is nice.

It was a country where I could really feel freedom and happiness.

Yes, how was it?

Today I talked about Laos.
