Yes, hello everyone.
Hello.
Yeah, today is September 7th.
はい。Yes.
It's Monday.
That's right.
はい。Yes.
Well, summer hasn't quite ended yet, but it's gotten much cooler in no time.
It really has.
That's a relief.
はい。Yes.
So today, kind of related to that, I'd like to talk about Hakuro in the twenty-four solar terms.
白露。Hakuro.
うん。Yeah.
I've never heard of Hakuro before.
I know about the twenty-four solar terms.
Um, they sometimes come up in this podcast too.
Ah, that's right.
They do come up.
Well, the famous ones are like the winter solstice, yeah.
The summer solstice.
うん。Yeah.
And also there's the spring equinox and autumn equinox.
That's right.
うん。Yeah.
Well, the autumn equinox is coming up soon.
So it's kind of like between summer and autumn, well, it's before autumn though.
That's right.
Right now, among those twenty-four seasons,
the autumn equinox is the start of autumn, and the one right before it, the very last one of summer, is Hakuro.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Well, a year has 365 days, and you divide that into twenty-four,
so it's about half a month each.
That's right.
Right, dividing it into twelve gives you one month.
And then you divide that in half again, so with twenty-four, each one is about two weeks, half a month,
what do you call it.
長さというかなんですけど、ああ今日今年はね、二千二十六年は今日九月七日からまあ白露in terms of length, and this year, 2026, Hakuro starts today, September 7th,
and Hakuro is written as white dew.
Oh, is that so.
そう。Yes.
And after all,
昼はねあの夏と同じように暑いんだけど、まあ朝とか夜はかなり涼しくなって、そのthe daytime is still hot like summer, but the mornings and nights get quite cool, and
in the morning, dew forms on the leaves and such.
Uh-huh.
Well, that's the image.
I see.
Well, I think that's actually true.
Yeah, yeah.
うん。Yeah.
We go to a lot of different places, but here in Nagano Prefecture where we are most often, yeah.
Mornings and evenings have gotten quite chilly, you could say.
Yeah.
Yesterday for the first time I started wearing long sleeves to sleep.
Ah, right.
うん。Yeah.
I was sleeping with just a blanket, but yesterday I used the comforter too.
Yeah.
うん。Yeah.
It's about fifteen degrees, I guess.
うん。It might drop a bit lower at night.
Depending on the place.
That's right.
It's gotten quite cool, but during the day it's still around thirty degrees as usual.
Yeah, it feels like it goes over thirty degrees.
The difference in temperature, you know.
It's big, isn't it.
I think this is the time of year when it's easiest to get sick.
Definitely.
Well, putting that aside, this Hakuro is really
まあまあそれはそうとして、この白露っていうのはやっぱりthe time when things change from the end of summer into autumn, and it really feels exactly like that.
Yeah.
This was decided by people way back in ancient times, like in China,
これってすごいあの大昔のというか昔のまあ中国とかの方々がit's that kind of way of thinking.
Oh, from that long ago.
Yeah, these twenty-four solar terms are decided by the position of the sun.
Oh, is that so.
Yes, well, by the position of the sun, or rather the position of the Earth — the Earth goes around the sun once in a year, right.
It's decided by where it is in that cycle.
Well, the easiest ones to understand are the winter solstice and the summer solstice.
Yeah.
うん。They're the easiest to understand, right.
Yeah.
Right.
And the spring equinox and autumn equinox, it's in between those.
Yeah.
うん。Since it's decided by that position,
Yeah.
うん。it's generally accurate.
Oh, I see.
It's not just an image, it's scientific.
Uh-huh.
It's decided by the positional relationship between the sun and the Earth, so.
Yeah.
うん。It's pretty accurate when it comes to the weather.
So that's how it is.
Of course, compared to the past, there's global warming now, yeah yeah,
and various things are said about that, so.
Yeah.
うん。Yeah.
Well, it might be a little different, though.
うん。Yeah.
In terms of how it feels within the year, it's close, isn't it.
Yeah, you can pretty much use it when you say something like, oh, this season has really come around.
うん。Yeah.
I often think that, up until around the end of August, even in the evening it's still...
I think, ah, it's summer.
Yeah, I get that.
But, well, especially once we get into September, after about a week, right at this time called Hakuro,
I get this feeling like, wow, it gets dark early.
Right, it does get chilly, and you can really feel how the brightness and darkness you see with your eyes is changing.
That's right.
In our house, the kids go to bed pretty early, around 7 to 7:30.
And in summer, it's still normally bright even at 7:30.
That's right.
そう。Yeah.
So they don't really fall asleep, but recently...
From around 6:30 the sky is already getting quite dark, and by 7 it's dark.
That's right.
So, well, they do go to sleep.
That's right.
I find that quite interesting — humans, especially when you have little kids, in the morning, maybe they're close to animals, like following the sun's
動きに合わせてまあ朝もねあのなかなか夏は早く起きてたけど、movement — in summer they woke up early in the morning, but
well, gradually they've started waking up later.
That's right.
I think it's interesting how it changes.
Right, right.
Well, that's Hakuro for you, and speaking of Hakuro, it's the time when autumn
その味覚とかが始まる時期で、flavors start to come in,
やっぱりand well,
Japan has seasonal specialties and such for each season, but Hakuro means pears and grapes
are coming out.
They're coming into season, and we've recently been lucky to have lots of chances to eat these seasonal grapes and pears,
which we're grateful for.
When this time comes, all kinds of fruit appear, which is nice — it's that so-called appetite of autumn feeling.
That's right, there's a season you feel through food too.
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.
Looking forward to it.
I personally prefer the cold season, so
I'm happy that we're about to enter the cold season.
That's right, there are lots of foods you like.
Summer is fine in its own way, but I still like the cold better.
Eating warm things when it's cold, that's enjoyable, isn't it.
That's right.
And pretty soon.
Here in Nagano where we live, the mountains are gradually starting to change color.
That's right.
It's still a bit early, but that's something to look forward to.
True.
And I still go to Kyoto often lately, and I went to Nara the other day too, but over there it's still hot.
Still a ways to go?
Yeah, it's still not quite to the point where you can really feel autumn in the air.
Well, the heat has gradually eased a bit, maybe, but it still feels more like summer than autumn.
Right.
And with things like these twenty-four solar terms,
It's like we can feel the seasons the same way people in the past did,
That's kind of amazing.
Yeah, it's truly surprising that they adopted and created that way of thinking way back then, and that even now
It's still continuing — I find that kind of interesting.
People in the past were probably smarter.
Exactly.
You know, nowadays we're completely reliant on calendars and such.
Like, what date is it today?
Right, right, right.
But back then, you know, they didn't have those things, and they were farming and such, so
I think the position of the sun, the length of the day, the temperature, things like that were really important.
You know, taking that sensitivity — seeing, feeling, and deciding —
I think it's amazing that they turned that into a system like that.
That's true.
Right, right.
And, well, the way it's set up in roughly two-week intervals, you know, that's just right.
Just right, really, really.
You can feel it, and then after another two weeks, yes, finally it's autumn, for real, yes,
That's when it happens, yes, that's the autumn equinox,
はい。Yes.
So we started from a bit of an awkward spot, but I think it'd be nice to talk about the 24 solar terms each time.
No, I really didn't know about this one, so I learned a lot.
That's true.
うん。Yeah.
I only really know the famous ones.
Right, right, right.
うん。Yeah.
So there's that, yeah.
It's fine to talk about that, and actually this podcast is almost about to reach episode 1,000.
千。A thousand.
We're at nine hundred and something now, right?
That's right.
We're at nine hundred and ninety-something.
Once we hit a thousand, I'm thinking of stopping the numbering.
To mark a thousand.
No, we'll do a thousand.
はい。Yes.
We'll do a thousand, but from a thousand and one on, I'm thinking of stopping the numbering.
はい。Yes.
Having numbers somehow makes it harder to update.
Ah, I see.
I think that's largely due to my personality, though.
うん。Yeah.
Sometimes, you know, when you haven't really thought about anything and just want to record on a whim.
Yeah, yeah.
For example, if you only have your smartphone, you could just talk here and record it, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Well, or using a mic as usual, there are various options, but at times like that you're like, wait, what number is this now, and also
Sometimes we do video episodes too, for YouTube.
But with podcasts there's no video, so it doesn't make sense, and stuff like that, so then the numbers get off and there are all these issues.
Right.
And I thought I don't want to worry about that kind of thing.
That's true.
Well, I want to keep it casual.
And by putting numbers on them, it's making it even harder to keep updating.
I see.
そう。Right.
And it's painful.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, it often happens that you're like, wait, what number is this now, and then you can't do it.
That's right.
It would be nice if we could make it easy to do it in any way.
そう。Right.
So, with episode 1000 as the last one, we're kind of rebirthing it, in a way.
うん。Yeah.
Well, not really rebirthing it, though.
Lately we've been moving more and more toward filming more easily.
Well, I think that's good.
うん。Yeah.
Well, I'm in the car right now, but I've been thinking I want to change things so we can film casually.
That's right.
So yeah, that's how I'd like to do it going forward.
ね。Right.
はい。Yes.
Let's keep at it from here on.
またね。See you.
Yeah.
うん。Yeah.
I'm thinking it would be nice if episode 1000 came right around the autumn equinox.
ね。Yeah.
1000 is amazing.
うん。Yeah.
うん。Yeah.
Well, we've been doing this for about five years now.
ね。2021Right. 2021
2021year, January I think. 2021
年の1月からfrom January of that year
we've been doing it, just before my son was born, and he's already five now, so that means we've been doing it for five years.
Really.
I'm truly grateful that you're listening.
はい。Yes.
So that's it for today, but please try to feel the 24 solar terms in this way.
はい。Yes.
Bye-bye.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Well then, goodbye.
