Cars.
Yeah, today it's about the fact that there are still so many things I've never done. Yes yes
Hi everyone, how are you?
That's a long title.
About the fact that there are still many things I've never done. Yes yes yes yes.
Well, how I think about this title is, well, an idea comes to mind.
For example, yesterday, when was this.
Gym, no, not gym.
Uh, the supermarket.
Uh, in the morning I went to the supermarket a bit,
while I was riding my bicycle, and I came up with this idea.
So I stopped and jotted it down on my phone.
I usually write in the drafts folder of Gmail.
Because it's the easiest.
So I'd like to talk about that.
What do you call it, like
はっきりっていうかふわっとした大体のこうなんかこう話したい内容みたいなのがこう出てきてa vague, rough idea of what I want to talk about comes up
and a podcast kind of starts in my head a little.
This is Japanese con Teppei.
Today it's like, things I want to do something something, it just starts like that.
Well, in that way, if I just memo that title for now, somehow
I can talk about it.
And if I didn't memo the title, what would happen is, I'd completely forget it.
Surprisingly so.
That's, you know, bad.
Well, maybe that's normal, I don't know.
Maybe it's age after all.
I'm not sure, but I just can't remember it at all, and it just passes by.
That idea just disappears.
Well, maybe I'll think of it again someday, but if I don't write it down I forget it.
Well but
But then again, there's never a day like oh I have nothing to talk about today, so it just gets replaced by another topic,
well well well, but I still want to memo what I want to talk about and talk about it.
So to say it once more, it's about the fact that there are still many things I've never done.
Well, the other day, a while ago, quite a while ago, on the beginner podcast
I talked about traveling in Japan, well, about Japan travel, like for example
Well, many people have been to all kinds of places, right, like Tohoku
あの沖縄とかでなんか北陸とかね石川県とか富山県とかあの辺もlike Okinawa, and like Hokuriku, Ishikawa, Toyama, that area
Shikoku too, but I have almost none, really none. I haven't been to Okinawa yet, never been to Tohoku
I've never been to Hokuriku, Shikoku, well I've only been to Kochi a bit and never been anywhere else
Honestly, even in Kyushu.
Well, I hardly know it.
I've never been to Kumamoto City, and I think I've never been to Kagoshima either.
And, well, I've been to Miyazaki, but I've never been to Miyazaki City.
And furthermore, even within Oita, this summer.
Taken by Mr. Sato to the area we went to, uh, Saiki.
Was that Saiki City? I had never been to that area either.
So there are just so many things I've never done.
And it's about how I feel about that.
And it's not just Japan, there are many places around the world I've never been to, and furthermore, you know
Well, my kids are getting a bit older now, and I've been reading math books with them, and physics, science, biology, things like that.
Well, what we call rika in Japan — in Japan we say rika for science.
We call children's science rika, and when they get to around middle school, they probably start using various different terms, like kagaku, that
物理フィジックスですね物理とかなんかいろんな言葉を多分中学校か高校とかになると使い始めるんですねphysics, physics for physics, and they probably start using all these different terms when they get to middle school or high school.
And then there's history, and
まあいろいろなことですよwell, all sorts of things.
I'm studying all sorts of things together with my kids once again, and I really think this.
There are so many things I didn't know, even now.
で。And.
So why haven't I done it until now? I don't know, I really don't know.
Why haven't I been interested in various things and pursued them until now.
For example, going back to the travel story, why have I never been to Okinawa until now.
There's no reason, really.
Maybe it's just because it seemed like a hassle, or something like that, but I just never had the opportunity, or rather, I never made the opportunity.
Anyway, I thought about it like this.
Why do I do that, why don't I do the things I want to do.
And, you know, it's not a town I don't want to go to.
I'm really interested in Okinawa, yet I haven't gone.
Why am I leaving it undone, why am I leaving the things I want to do undone.
And when I thought about this, I realized something essential about my psychology, about my own mind.
Well, doing what you want to do, going where you want to go, means that the thing you wanted to do comes to an end.
そしてAnd then
Well, what lies beyond that ending is usually a sense of emptiness, or else you just keep going on and on, and there's no end.
For example, someone who traveled around the world — what do they do after going around the world, well...
Some people say they're satisfied, satisfied, but quite a lot of people
なんかこう終わったみたいなまあfeel like it's over, well, a kind of sense of achievement and also a kind of sadness, a wistfulness, apparently.
Well, going around the world — but there are still so many towns you haven't been to, so the meaning of going around the world
I don't really understand it, but even if you just visit the capitals, does that mean you've known those countries? That leaves a big question.
Coming only to Tokyo doesn't mean you've seen Japan, and going only to New York certainly doesn't mean you've seen America.
So, what can I say, well, going around the world is like that anyway, but with all sorts of things, like studying or even hobbies,
For example, I hadn't watched movies for several years. If you've been listening to me,
例えばですよ僕ねあのまあ数年間映画を見てなかったんですよねこれを聞いてる人ならyou might recall, you might remember, I often said things like that, that I was losing interest in movies.
But now I'm watching a ton of them, I'm really watching a lot.
I'm properly watching the Batman series now too.
Christopher Nolan's, you know.
And back when I worked at a video rental store about 20 years ago, I watched a lot,
でそのまあレンタルビデオで働いてた20年ぐらい前はたくさん見てたしand even after that, you know, moments come when I feel like watching.
And for several years I'll watch a lot, but then I'll stop for several years after that.
It's the same with manga. There are times when I read a lot and times when I don't read at all.
There are periods.
So, during a period when I'm not watching movies, for example, what happens is
じゃあね全然そのまあ例えば映画を見てない期間何が起こるかというとthe movies I should watch just pile up.
Even if I do nothing and don't watch, the world keeps making movies, and even if I don't read, the world keeps making manga.
So the books I want to read and the movies I want to watch pile up a lot.
And when I realize that, I'm happy.
Wow, there are so many movies, so many unwatched movies being made again.
I haven't watched most movies from the last 10 years, so there's this much, and there's even more, even more, even more interesting movies.
It's the same with manga.
Manga is like that too.
Well, it's been about 20 years since I stopped reading manga much, so I guess I started reading again about 3 or 4 years ago
I was really surprised.
I hadn't read at all, but I thought there are so many interesting manga like this, and I was really delighted.
And this, how should I put it.
Well, it's something essential.
Not having done it means, well, there are still things you should do, things you want to do left.
So because I haven't traveled much in Japan, actually surprises remain for me.
Still plenty.
Well, of course, travel, for example Okinawa twenty years ago and Okinawa now are probably different, so just go to both, go every year.
If you go every year, you'll have a slightly different experience each year.
That's true, but what I want to say here is not really that, but rather something more
漠然とね、あの大きいことで、まあそのvague, you know, something bigger, well, that
there are parts you haven't experienced, which is, um.
あのまあ簡単にそのネガティブなことだけではなく、まだまだなんかこうum, well, not just simply something negative, but if you think there's still
things left to do, maybe it's not such a bad thing, that's what I thought.
Just like a child.
What do you all think when you see a baby?
Just imagining all the experiences this child will have from now on makes you a little excited, right?
Then what do you think when you see an elderly person? It's a bit sad, isn't it.
You feel like, I wonder if they'll be alive next New Year.
How many more New Years can they see, how many more times can I meet them, how many more times can they eat that,
there's a lingering sadness, isn't there.
But, well, if you live moment by moment, a tiny baby and
an elderly person are the same, today is the same.
10But still, it's the future you imagine. 10
What will this child be doing in 10 years, what will they be doing in 20 years — looking at a baby, at a child, you feel hope.
Well, there remains that excitement of what you haven't experienced yet.
So what does it mean to have experiences? When you have a lot of experiences, what's left becomes less.
And, you know, what do people who want to stay excited forever do? They start something they've never been interested in before.
For example,
well, like taking an interest in a sport you had no interest in at all, if you did.
For example, if I started tennis, which I think will probably absolutely never happen, but
well, if I started tennis, what would happen is, wow, there was a world like this.
And I'd become friends with other people who play tennis, and talk about tennis players,
テニスの試合を見たり、テレビで見たり見に行ったりして、watch tennis matches, on TV or go see them,
there's a fun that comes precisely because I had never played tennis until now.
And at that time you should probably be grateful.
Well, you might also regret it.
Why didn't I play tennis earlier?
At the same time, because I'm doing it now, because I just started now, I'm this excited.
I think it's a fact that these two seemingly contradictory things exist at the same time.
Well, it's the same for all of you with Japanese.
In a way, don't you ever regret it?
Why didn't I start studying Japanese earlier, like in elementary or middle school?
Other people started much earlier.
Why didn't I start earlier?
Why did I end up starting at sixty?
But on the other hand, I think it's fun precisely because of that.
Because you started recently, the world of Japanese suddenly appeared before your eyes.
Is there anything this interesting?
I don't think thinking positively like that is a bad thing.
No matter how old you are, I think finding a new world is still exciting.
So at times like that, you should be grateful.
Ah, thank you that I haven't been interested in tennis until now.
Thank you that I haven't studied Japanese until now.
I forgot what example I was giving, but anyway, travel is something I hadn't done.
Thank you that I haven't traveled much until now.
Please be grateful for your own past laziness, your idleness.
Having a lot of things you haven't done left is not a bad thing.
Rather, it might be something exciting.
See you again.
